Question Love my car, but there are a few little issues...

Hey guys,

I've had my 2014 991 4S for about a month and a half now, and I've nearly clocked 8000KM already. I use this beautiful car as my daily driver, and I've had a great time in it so far. I've done long distance trips, high speed attempts (290km/h+) & raced it around tight mountain roads. It's been an incredible car!

There are however a few things that have come to my attention, and I would like to report them here. Maybe some of you have a solution. As my Porsche dealer is quite far from my home, I have not reported any of these issue yet.

* I have 4 way adjustable electric seats. The passenger seat make a cracking/squeak noise when someone is sitting in it. Every time I get to a corner, or when the person moves a bit, a noise some from the panel where the seat adjusters are. If you apply pressure on it with your hand, the noise doesn't happen.

* Every time I go over a slight bump in the road, a very short click noise comes from (I think) somewhere under the steering column. I have not located the exact source yet though. It almost sounds like the first click the indicator noise makes when that is on.

* Every time I close my drivers door, it feels like there is some play in the door handle. It also makes a very slight cracking noise when you put some force on it when you pull it closed. The door also doesn't make a nice deep "thump" sound anymore, like my passenger door still does. Instead it kinda sounds like something isn't fully tightened, which makes it sound kinda cheap when you close it.

* I notice quite a bit of vibration in the accelerator pedal under soft acceleration in certain rev ranges (mainly 2k-3k rpm). It's most noticeable on the highway when driving in 7th gear when you want to accelerate just a little bit. When the engine is revving hard, it doesn't vibrate at all. A lot of people have reported jerkiness in the engine around low revs. I also have this, and I think it's linked to the vibrations in the accelerator pedal.

* Since about a week ago I noticed that when the car is running idle whilst not moving, that every few seconds there is a slight vibration coming from the engine which is noticeable in the cabin. I think something is not 100% with the tick-over settings. If I listen very closely to the engine during tick-over, it also makes a slightly nervous sound now. Probably linked to the vibrations that I'm feeling in the ****pit during tick-over.

Has anyone experienced any of these problems? If so, did you get it fixed? And how.

It might sounds a bit like I don't enjoy my car, but that is absolutely not the case. I love it to bits!

To cover yourself and to possibly get these cleared up, make a list and take it to your local Porsche dealer and gave them go over everyone of these issues. Some may be an easy fix, others could be more. Either way, you want to have these faults documented for future reference. Most reputable dealers should do their best to get these sorted out.

I too have a few quirks in my car.
- The passenger seatbelt squeaks at times when there is a passenger.

- The driver side window/mirror controls makes a slight rattle at times.

- I can hear what could possibly be styrofoam or something similar squeaking around my driver side door speaker.

- I am also having them look into the sunroof rattle.

None of these problems are major, but they are annoyances. I'm taking my car in Wednesday anyway for some dings from damn beech nuts. So we will see.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi, your experience can almost be a twin to mine. It's my first Porsche and I'm enjoying it, but like you I have a list of little things that are significantly distracting me.

1. I have 14-way, I'm in UK so RHD, my seat has creaking from the silver panel covering the joint between the seatback and the bottom. I've brought it to the dealer and they tried to fix it but haven't succeeded. They'll need to try again.

2. steering column noise I haven't got

3. driver's door - exactly as you described. In addition there is vibration/rattle at the top of the trim. The first part (cracking when pulling close) they fixed, the second failed to fix.

4. virbration in soft acceleration - I notice it most in 7th gear at 46mph, if I accelerate gently (so it doesn't kick down to 6th), often the is a noise from the drive train, like metal rattling.

5. I've had a list of other problems they have fixed, eg loud rattle in glass sunroof and rattle in b-pillar etc.

Great car, but too many rattles!

I had few rattles/squeaks etc but these have settle in last 7 months. The seats do squeak when back rests are moved forward (I've got 18 way seats). I'm heavy (over 200lbs) but the seats don't squeak when I'm in it or in he standard driving position.

There's however one minor annoying very faint sound (sounds like an electrical motor/pump kind of like "Tonk" sound) that comes from left rear engine compartment when the car moves from stand still. The workshop says that's from the brake pump...anyone else has it?

The "tonk" sound - are you talking about the sound when you move from stand still without first manually releasing the park brake, ie letting the car automatically release it?

Speaking of the parking brake, the sound it makes on applying or releasing has got to be one of the most annoying noises on the planet.

Nope. That's quite obvious (and somewhat annoying too)-it's not that...

If you are in 7th and trying to accelerate from under 3000RPM you are actually stressing the engine. Remember the torque doesn't come in until you get close to 5000 rpm (max torque at 5600 on both the base and the S engines. 7th is designed as a highway cruising gear with the emphasis on cruising at a constant speed.

I have PDK so I'm just using whatever the PDK selects. If the PDK selects a gear that will stress/harm the engine then Porsche has a problem.

In fact the noise I hear is in 7th gear at 46mph, which is closer to 1200rpm. I would be cruising at 46mph, and the car selects 7th. When I try to gently accelerate, it stays in 7th and there is noise. If I step any harder then it'll kick down to 6th. If this noise is the car "stressing" then the PDK shouldn't allow me to do that?

The PDK wants to shift down as you are way below any normal powerband at 1200 rpm. Why fight it? PDK is sure smarter than me and if it wants to downshift then there is a reason. Essentially you are trying to force the engine to "lug" against the wishes and programming of the computers.

I use manual shifting of the PDK about 98% of the time. Except on the highway at a level cruise I never run at less than 2000RPM in any gear. These are sports cars not Prius's/Smart cars where an owner would want the ultimate in gas mileage.

But I'm not "forcing" it to stay in 7th. It's the PDK deciding that the driver is not accelerating hard enough to warrant shifting into 6th. I'm not fighting anything and if it shifts into 6th I don't stop it. What I'm expericing is that when crusing at 46-50mph, the PDK will choose 7th (obviously trying to save fuel) and if I accelerate gently, there is a metallic rattle noise.

I know if I step hard on it it'll kick down, but I don't necessarily want to accelerate hard all the time in heavy traffic.

Are you by any chance getting "pinging" as we used to know it? Shouldn't happen in today's cars though. Otherwise, I think the car is objecting to lugging it. Instead of doing "kick down" try downshift while in auto mode. Will go down for about 4 seconds to allow that acceleration for a short while and then will automatically upshift when appropriate.

I know it's a sports car but as a DD often traffic does not allow me to use even 30% of the car's capabilities unfortunately. Of cause I can drive much harder when conditions allow but what distinguishes the 911 from most other sports car is that it CAN be used as a DD whereas most other can't.

I have this "tonk" noise as well. It is really annoying. I brought it in to the dealer and they replaced the brake pads which initially alleviated the problem. It has come back. When I pump or pressed down on the brakes and slightly release it, I can hear the tonk noise. I don't remember hearing the noise during the first month.

My car is the 991 C2.

If it is the brake pump, is this normal or is there a fix for it?
