My new c4s delayed in Houston, for potential seat problem (379 cars delayed)
I haven't confirmed whether the issue is 18-way or other seats. I put that in my post to see if others would do the same and help triangulate what the actual issue is. This morning my dealer scoured the list of 379 VINs and did NOT see my car on it. He has a call in to the port to see what's what. He suspects that they held all the cars until the list was published (Thursday) and that if mine's not on the list it could/should get released imminently. I'm on my way to the dealer now to get a loaner as I've been left carless by the delay. I will try to find out more (including the TSB details and/or number) and post on my return.
Update:
The cars have been held for a safety recall, which means they may NOT be offered for sale (nor delivered) without significant penalties to Porsche.
The issue, which I got to see in an email from Porsche to the dealer, is (paraphrasing here):
A defective plug in the passenger seat wiring harness causes intermittent contact and may disconnect the knee and (one other) airbag on the passenger side as well as illuminate the airbag off light.
In the email, the recall was labelled AD04 and pertains to Boxster, Boxster S, Cayman, Cayman S, Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera S, Carrera 4S. Yup, all the sports cars!
It did not list anywhere in the email which seats were impacted (14-way, 18-way, etc.) It did say that the fix was to replace the passenger seat with seats which, at the time of the email (10/10,) were not yet en route to the USA. The expected delay was listed at 2-3 weeks.

The email instructed the dealers to provide cars to impacted customers through the Porsche Mobility program and wrapped words around it saying "do whatever you have to do to maintain customer satisfaction." I am now driving a used, gray base Cayenne, which is fine with me for a short time....
I of course launched the NHTSA recall website intending to get more details if possible. However, since "we the people" so wisely sent a bunch of yahoos to Washington, the NHTSA has a notice up that only recalls on or before 9/30 would be posted until funding was restored. Thanks for playing.
On my personal car, there is no definite word yet. My salesman and I were speculating that because the VIN for my car was NOT on the list of 379 (I checked as well,) that the 18-way seats may not be impacted. We also guessed that the port hold was put on all cars while PAG got the recall list pulled together. It would be easier for PAG to deliver a whole bunch of seats to the port and get them replaced there than to have to send the seats to each individual dealer for action.
Therefore, it is my fervent hope (which well could be dashed) that my car will escape the clutches of the port sometime in the next day or two and be delivered early next week.

Your dealer can tell you where the car is in the production and shipping process. Once the car gets loaded on a ship, the dealer can give you the name of the ship which you can track on the Interweb. Search the posts in this forum for details. When it gets to the port, for you it should be lickety-split, unless you get sideways with a random safety recall like I did.
jnscolo,
Thanks for the information. I thought mine might have been held up at the port but it's being released on Tuesday. It arrived at the Port of Halifax on September 27, 2013 and was put on rail to the West Coast. It arrived October 11, 2013 and is scheduled to be released October 15th. I'll ask the dealer if they've heard of the recall and will look out for any recall bulletins.
Thanks.

Looks like the Canadian equivalent "Transport Canada" has the safety recall posted. It doesn't state exactly which seats only that on "certain vehicles a defective wiring harness in the passenger seat may result in the deactivation of the passenger side frontal and knee airbags, illuminating the airbag warning lamp". Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger seat in affected vehicles.

It makes sense to hold up the cars at the various ports as Porsche wouldn't want this liability of an airbag not deploying when warranted.

JNSColo,
I really appreciate all the details you have posted. This is way more information than I was given. I was not offered a loaner by my dealer. Please do post if you get any updates. I will do the same.

If you don't need a loaner I suppose it's no big deal. If you do, you should ask for one. My dealer knew I needed one because they took my Audi S5 at the end of its lease last week.
Everyone,
I spoke with my dealer and also Porsche North America. If you're concerned and want to confirm if you're vehicle is affected, you can call Porsche North America and they can perform a search based on your name. They told me the cars can't be sold and delivered until the repair is made. The passenger seat will need to be replaced and they have yet to receive the firm shipping dates of the new parts yet. It's unfortunate given that this is the 2nd year of production for these cars. Please feel free to add any additional information you guys/girls may have.

Ray,
The information you provided is very helpful. I called Porsche of North America just now. My dealer never gave me a vin #, so they are going to contact him and get one. Then there supposed to call me back once they know more. Told me it may be a few days before I hear back from them :/

Joe,
I didn't have my VIN # and Porsche North America was able to search my car based on my name. They verified my address and told me my car was affected. They'll match your name and address to the VIN #. The Porsche rep was quite helpful but didn't know which seats (i.e. 14 way vs. 18 way, etc.) were affected. He said they don't have an estimate of parts/seat delivery as of yet. The dealer is not to suppose to release the cars until the fix is made. Apparently some cars have already been released prior to the service bulletin and Porsche North America are trying to track those owners down. I'm not sure if I should be concerned about this recall. I suppose it's a "normal" recall. Do you think it might affect resale value?

They are doing a complete replacement of the seat. Therefore, I just don't see it impacting resale value.
