Insurance coverage and the 991

When I first looked at the 991 (and most newer sports cars) It seemed that aluminum was being using more and more to reduce weight. The other issue, especially with the 991 S, the 20" wheels make it easy to damage at great replacement cost. That's why I decided that the 991 was one of my cars I definitely should have the lowest deductible insurance I could get.
I wound up getting a $50 deductible policy on collision which cost me an additional $600/yr.
Recently I came back to my car after dinner out, to find that some a-hole had backed into my bumper and left scratches and marks. The car is being repaired now, cost...$1000 to remove the bumper, repaint it and replace lettering. It definitely felt good that the hit to me (besides all the usual aggravation) was only $50.
Now the bumper is obviously not aluminum but I would highly recommend going the extra bucks for the lowest deductible insurance.
My son, who has a Panamera GTS, damaged the rear passenger door. They had to replace the door (could not straighten the aluminum) and the replacement door, paint, etc. cost $10K! Word to the wise...

It didn't really cost your son $10K out of pocket to fix that, right? He had insurance with a deductible, right?

I recently read a posting which the person changed the insurance coverage for winter season. Reduce the coverage to non-operating vehicle to save money. I recently bought a Jeep to drive, so I can put the 911 in the garage. I took the advise, called my insurance company, and saved myself $600. As soon as I did that, the bank called and said I have deficient coverage. They said they cannot trust their customers to never drive the car even during winter/storage months. So they will required full coverage at all time.
I guess this money saving idea can only apply to people that own the car out right.

I would probably still do the $1000 deductible though. Because you pay $600 more a year on premium + $50. So you only really saved $350 if you got in any accident.
If I was lucky enough to not get in any accident, I will save $600 a year.

$1000 deductible on a Pana GTS - Why?
A broken headlight alone will blow through that deductible.

Plus, putting in a claim for $500 worth of damage a couple of times will certainly result in a premium hike.

+ a car w/ a history or story or whatever you want to call it
gets the added bonus of "diminished value" in most people's opinion.

See if your bank cares about the liability portion of the insurance. I don't see why they would. You could waive that part during the winter and save some money.

Very true. Any damage under $1000, I would probably pay out of my own pocket so save me from increasing premium. So no need for me to insure for anything less than $1000 deductible.

Liability port is required minimum by the state.
