Question About Driving from Chicago to Miami next week--do i go in winters tires?

Seeking some advice from fellow 911 owners....

Driving my 2013 911 S from chicago to miami next week....plan to leave her down in miami till maybe march or april....

Currently have Michelin Pilot Alpin on them (winter tires)...and I'm not sure if its wiser to to keep them on for any winter weather through the more northern parts of the drive but then drive on winter tires in eventually more warmer conditions for the next 3 months...or to switch back to my summers and hope for the best the first leg of trip but have more correct tires for the rest of it...how bad is it to drive winter tires in miami's 70 degree weather?

Anyone with any firsthand knowledge making the drive down....I would really appreciate the advice!

Also.....does anyone have any experience with taking Route 41 versus the more conventional Interstate 65?

happy holidays!

I would do summer myself. By the time you hit Nashville it will be plenty warm.

This spring I got stuck in a blinding snow storm (at night) on the expressway in my 981 on summer tires with nowhere to go. Never want to do that again, but the car was fine for those 2 hours.

Heading to the gulf side Thursday myself, safe travels!

Have you considered shipping the car in a closed transport rather than dealing with the tire issue and drive in the snow regions ?

Put the summer rubber back on, watch the weather and pick a window with clear weather. Drive with caution until out of the cold. If you run the winters in Florida they will last about 2,000 - 4,000 miles and will need to be replaced.

Ship the summer tires to Florida or to a Porsche dealer on the way where the temp is higher than 50 degrees. Swap the tires and pay the dealer to store the winter tires for you. On way back swap tires at dealer or, if it's warm enough ship the tires from dealer back home

This is the way to go. I have a C2S. Last winter I got caught in unexpected light snow on a short drive from Manhattan to the Bronx. Really, it was a dusting and the temperature got down to freezing. On summer tires the car as un-driveable, and the worst if you should come upon the slightest incline. I had to park it overnight, come back to the city by train and pick it up the next day. I have shipped tires another time driving a car from Washington St. to NYC. It was cheap and quick.

Google it. You will find a great article from Road and Track (I think) where they tested winter tires in the summer, on track, and found not discernible wear difference between winters and summers in the summer.

My Xmas trip was Milwaukee to Dallas to Atlanta and then back. I run my winter setup for the trip, no problem and the wear seems fine to me. That being said there is little to no "on the edge" driving during those trips.

Good luck.
Roy

Try giving Exotic Transport a call. (http://www.exoticcartransport.com/)

They've done the Chicago > Florida run for me many times and it seems they always have a truck in your area...they may be able to pick up sooner then you think. Worth a shot.

Thumbs up

+1 from me as well.

I seasonally have a car (currently the X5M) in PA (summer/fall/early winter) and FL (late winter/spring) and ship the summers to FL.

As tempting as it is to rationalize making the entire trip with summers, I regularly encounter snowstorms this time of year and need to be confident in my ability to get there safely.

That said...I definitely want the summers while I'm in Florida! This is the best bet when you're not looking to ship the car direct.

final decision---ship the tires to atlanta

thanks for all the different advice---

my final decision is that's the weather around Chicago is just too unpredictable, and since I have to leave on the 26th, I'm going to keep the winter tires on...but I will be shipping my tires to a Porsche dealership in Atlanta and stopping there to swap them out, and then ship my winters back to Chicago---

since its just the tires and not the wheels shipping shouldn't be too expensive..and this way im being the safest I can be and still getting my summer tires on mid way through my trip---

thanks for all the advice happy holidays to all my fellow 911s.....ill try posting some pics of the drive down cant wait to see how she handles the long drive down...

I think that's a smart choice. I would not recommend driving summer tires "out of" the weather this time of year. It's too unpredictable to take the chance of getting stuck in bad weather on summer tires.
