Porsche and Diplomatic Sales

Ok, I am in the initial stages of researching the Porsche Diplomatic sales process and can't find a whole lot of information. I know it does exist because Porshe does have it listed on their German Website (I copied and attached the English version of their website below).

Does anyone 6SO member happen to have any experience with this or may have done it? I am about to go back to Afghanistan for one year and plan on buying either a Macan S or 911S while I am there. One version that I read is, you have to go to Porsche HQ in Germany and order the car directly from them. They take you out on the track and the autobahn to ensure it is what you want, which would just suck (being sarcastic). The car will be a US Spec car and they ship it directly to the Porsche dealership in the US of your choice at no additional cost and 4% below MSRP; plus no sales tax (I'm not sure how that works however, since the sales tax is usually charged by the state that you register it in). If that is the case, I could always swing by Germany on one of my rest breaks, order the car, and tour the museum too.

I plan on calling the Porsche Dip rep for more infor, but want to collect my thoughts before calling so I'm not nailing him with 50,000 questions.

The Porsche website on Dip sales is listed below:

English version

Returning "diplomats" are usually not charged taxes when importing their personal effects, provided that the goods have been owned for xx number of months.

Taxes aside, couldn't you get a similar price in the US seeing that its the largest volume market.

Dux, that's what I am thinking - I am in the research stage now. I think going to the Porsche HQ, touring the museum, and driving the track would be a blast but don't know if it would be worth it in the long run. I'll continue to research it and I have plenty of time. I don't leave for Afghanistan for another 6 months.

Ill pass on going to Afghanistan. One of the last places I would want to be. I'll pay MSRP to avoid that.

How do you bring a Porsche in Arghanistan? Like physically how do you get it in? Does it just get shipped with the rest of your belongings by water? Or do they fly it in? Then how do you make sure it's got decent gasoline while there? And how do you service it if something goes wrong? Is it dangerous driving around in such a conspicuous vehicle?

Haha, no, I will not bring my Porsche to Afghanistan. I want to buy it through the Dip sales while I am there and Porsche will ship it back to the US dealership of my choice. No chance in you know where would I ever ship my Porsche over there.

I suppose you ship it like everything else, in pieces.

Yes, and then you have to leave the car behind when you leave, just like the billions of dollars of other equipment that the military is leaving behind because it costs more to ship home it than it's worth.

Considering how much was spent there and how little was gained I suppose we could have sent all high school graduates to private colleges with their own 991 Turbos and prepaid gas cards.
