My trip from Chicago to Miami (and back with my family of 4)

So just returned from an epic, and a bit inadvertent road trip...

Decided to drive my 2013 911 CS2 from Chicago down to Miami where my parents live and leave her parked down their during the winter months...thought I'd probably ship her back in the spring....

The way down there I picked up my brother in Davenport, Iowa because he was with family celebrating X-Mas in Iowa...so I left chicago 6 am on the 26th and about 2 hrs later picked him up there and then proceeded down to Nashville for the night....

Next day we made it to Atlanta around lunch to change from winter tires to summer tires...I had shipped my Summers down to a dealer in Atlanta since
i didn't want to risk driving on summers through the cold parts of the country and I wanted the ability to drive both fast and safe....anyways 2 hr lunch in Atlanta while they swapped tires and then made it to Tampa for the night....next day Miami was a 5 hr breeze....

In anycase, for 2 guys a road trip down there was a piece of cake....good fast speeds and plenty of comfort...and it was nice having the 911 down in miami instead of a rent a car...definitely makes it fun Valeting her in south beach

but then it got interesting...

turns out sunday while drinking my beach ****tails during the early afternoon, I get an email from united saying my flight home monday was cancelled...and that I was automatically moved to the following friday on a non direct flight....

So....since we (my wife and 2 children of 7 and 9-which had flown down ahead of me) had been driving around miami just fine...AND the ****tails had made me a bit loose...AND we really needed to get back to chicago for work and other obligations...we decided to all 4 of us drive back to chicago...

anyways...I did the trip in reverse...starting with stopping again in atlanta to swap back the tires (they were still there)...

Let me just say one thing and post a few pics for now...the 911 is an EPIC vehicle....it got the 4 of us back in relative comfort...and for the first 2 days effortless speed....and for the last day, SAFETY...

we encountered gnarly roads from Louisville all the way up Indiana on in the I-65....just complete ice, partially closed highways, drifts, crazy drivers, multiple cars and trucks on the side of the road, rest stops closed, etc....max speed was 25 mph for many stretches...

the car, a NON AWD, with simply just winter tires, performed perfectly....at times the car would drift a bit in the lane... but it was a complete skating rink as you will see form the pics attached....and yet give it a moment, and the car would find its traction somehow....

car was comfortable enough for 4...the 2 kids in the back hardly complained at all (of course APPLE and their products get a lot of credit)....and I just got to say what a special car....

now would I do it again...well not if I could choose my AUDI Q7 TDI instead...but if i didn't have the choice...in a heartbeat...and the drive down with just my brother was a sublime light speed like journey....

2 thumbs up for this amazing car....

Now you made me think of the Carrera as a baby Panamera.
Its awesome to see you getting your moneys worth out of the car.
What makes it handle good in dry, helps it handle well in snow too.

Im so inspired by this, that I offer to drive your car back to Florida for you, so you can maintain your original plan.

BTW - You must be an excellent driver to handle those roads.
Dont give the car all the credit.

I could relate to you in a way that I "do" take road trips on weekends with my wife and kids - just on 12/31, we drove up to Monterey (have done many times) with my wife and 2 boys 12 &9 in relative comfort. Now my 12 years old is getting a bit uncomfortable and kinda growing out of the rear seat.

The longest road trip we've all 4 taken together is from San Jose to LA when my C4S was about 3 months old and with both my kids a year younger. We all thoroughly enjoyed. Porsche definitely has hit a homerun with 991!

Impressive. Just out of curiosity, I am only 5'6" and there is not much room behind my seat. Did you drive with your seat pulled forward a little, or are you as short or shorter than me.

yea--12 is about as old as you can fit em in the back

My wife and I were saying that this was a great experience for a kids, because we don't think we could do it again as they get older...but up to 10-12 (depending on size of your kids) its totally doable...I would love to do the Monterey drive!! but I think Chicago to California and back is too long even for me!
