Hardwire radar detector - put away when parked?

Hi guys,

Just a simple question. For those who hardwire their radar detectors, do you remove it and put it away when you park? I want to hardwire my Escort 9500ix but I also don't want to leave it out where it could be stolen. Is it bad to keep disconnecting the power cord each time?

I have a Valentine that is hardwired and attached to the windshield behind and above the rearview mirror on the right side. It is visible to me and out of the way. It is not easily seen from outside at all. I've used this position for it with my last several cars over the past ten years. Never had an issue, never removed it even when I've left the car at the airport.

Very rarely, almost never. Sometimes if I park the car on the street in NYC on an iffy street but otherwise no.

I never stow my V1 when parked anywhere - in last 31 years, never been broken into.

I almost always remove it my 9500ix. Mine is mirror mounted, and takes about 6 seconds to remove. For me, that 6 seconds will result in a lot less aggravation, time, and money than having to replace a window, a detector, and anything else the punk may damage. Leaving it on for everyone to see says "Look at me, I am here to be stolen." My .02 cents.

Short term, yes, take it out. Long term, have a 9500ci pro with laser pro shifters installed and never look back!

Remove it, I had my 997 busted into, scratched the seats, spit on the PDK, always found a little glass here and there until I sold it, very annoying. If you have 5 seconds, remove it and put in glove. It will save you a lot of trouble.

I would have except it's illegal in Texas now.

I'll probably give into my paranoia (and knowing how Houston can be) and put it in my glove box each time.

Never stowed my 9500ix (or V1, or portable GPS in other cars) and never had any issue, even downtown Atlanta or parked at the airport for 2 weeks. Not sure radar detectors are a big thing for thieves (low 'margin'...). On top of it, your suction cups will show that a device usually sits there and that, like in probably 95% of the case, it is hidden the glovebox. Finally, when you have a new Porsche and a thug at work around it, there is already a big chance he is going to break in because he will expect to find something valuable in the car. Just my take on it. Not saying it applies everywhere
