PDK: Leave it in auto or Shift yourself?

I have a buddy with a 997 Turbo cab and he does not self shift. I am seeing more people do this, do you think the PDK is that good or do you shift it like the sequential system that it is (I know it's a double clutch)?

Oh, you had to start this again.. The PDK is that good... But if you want to shift with paddles, have fun. The PDK in auto is faster shifting than we are though. This is a preference thing though. I use both.

I read Excellence and the main test guy refuses to shift for himself turbo, GT3, any p-car. To me I'd drive in manual as a default. Not trying to start stuff just curious yo see what others prefer.

I agree with him. The thing with these PDK/DCT transmissions is that the power is uninterrupted due to rapid gear changes so changing gears doesn't destabilize the car.

The car can definitely shift better than I can because it's got faster reactions and better timing. Just a matter of picking the right shift pattern.

And with future generations it's going to get better as Porsche, BMW et al copy Lexus technology of timing gear shifts using GPS data of the road ahead.

Only shift it myself. Sometimes paddles, sometimes stick.

That is cool tech indeed, but I would still use the paddles. I was wondering why so many forum members were buying cars with the multi-function wheel instead of the sport design wheel with paddles. Sport design with paddles is a must for me.

I think Porsche should default to manual and drop the stick like they did on the 918.

In normal mode always auto shift.
In sport and sport plus ..80-90% manual shift

You should probably start a poll...

Do you have buttons or sport design w/paddles?

I use paddles when I want to hold a certain gear in a long sweeping turn.
(That's as close as I ever get to drifting )
I might also hit a paddle when I want some extra pull for an acceleration event.
For most normal driving, I leave it in auto.

The part I don't like about the PDK is that it's lurchy in stop and go driving.
At those times, I wish I had that extra pedal to control the clutch myself.
The PDK may be faster, but I'm smoother

I shift mine 95% of the time myself, other 5% is during warm up or other times I'm daydreaming
I tend to favor the stick for shifting, but in high speed/extra spirited driving I prefer both hands on the wheel and use the paddles. Drive 75% in sport plus, 20% sport 5% comfort (again for warm up). I've got less than 500 miles on mine, so who knows if my habits will change once I get more time in the car. Drove it today, it was heaven

I use Sport all the time (but drive mildly until the engine's warmed up) and I vary between Auto and Manual. Usually start off Auto since it's no fun shifting in Manual mode when the oil is cold as you don't get any sharp shifts until it's heated up. It's a lot of fun in either Paddles or Auto modes.

I use paddles or leave it in auto based entirely on how I feel like. this is one of the rare opportunities in life where you can have it 100% as you like, all the time! Talk about win-win. If I had to quantify, I'd say in daily city driving 90% auto/10% paddle override, and when I feel sporty it's maybe 50%/50%. I virtually never use the full manual mode (where you flip the PDK stick to the left).

While for my car this is true in normal and sport mode, unfortunately in sportplus there is considerable destabilization !
