Stock Sound System, Brand New 991 Cab

Hey Everyone,

Picked up a 991 Cab this past Saturday. The car has a stock sound system. After playing with it for the past week, I have to say that either there's something wrong with my front speakers or the stock audio is that bad. My front speakers rattle with even the slightest hint of bass. It almost seems that the speakers are not mounted properly. I did some searches on this and other forums, and it seems that it's hit or miss, some people have the rattling while others don't.

I called the dealer and he told me to bring it in so they will have a look. The dealer is far from me so I'm wondering if this is a known issue which has a solution or not?

The dealer is Paul Miller in NJ.

Any advise is most appreciated.

Love the car otherwise. Coming from a 08 997 cab with Bose, which I thought was just terrible but it's completely amazing compared to the 991 stock system.

Maybe stating the obvious, but check to make sure you don't have the bass adjustment turned up substantially. I played with the base system for quite a while, and it is not bad at all. It is much better than the Bose. You may very well have a bad driver.

I though I had a few rattles with my Bose system while driving off the lot. Turns out that bass was set to the highest levels, and there were dealer key rings and accessories placed in door storage pockets that were rattling.

Have the dealer check it out and fix it. It shouldn't rattle.

The base system is better than the Bose system? I wouldn't go that far. I test drove multiple 991s over summer, and every car that had the Bose system sounded better than the base sound system. That's not to say that the base speakers are bad, though.

The rattle is from the door panels, try rolling up a business card and inserting it in the front edge where the panel touches the door frame.

Most people would probably prefer the Bose, but for me it wasn't even close. Bose's gimmicks of using cheap materials and lower impedence drivers to squeeze more power out a cheaper amp just doesn't make quality sound. Bose is a marketing company, not a high-end audio manufacturer. Although cheap, the base audio system sticks to the basics.

The muddier and boomier the bass is and the sharper and brighter the high frequencies, the more most people are going to like it. Bose knows this. They have done a masterful job of brainwashing the public into thinking they make quality sounding products.

It's much like most people would prefer inferior LCD technology over Plasma. A brighter picture, doesn't make it better.

I agree with your opinion about Bose in general; I avoid any Bose products like the plague, and went to great lengths to order custom audio speakers, amps, and subs for our house system. I can't stand how Bose charges an insane amount of money and sounds mediocre at best.

That said, my ears preferred Bose's system compared to the stock Porsche system. It didn't matter what audio source, sound setting, or environment I was in; the Bose system sounded better to me.

To each his own.

It's a well known problem. The front, leading edge of the door panels fit loosely and vibrate especially with the bass turned up. My dealer put felt along/under the leading edge and it helped a lot. I added black monster tape along the front edge and that fixed it. Some have reported adding tighter panel clips inside which is probably the best fix but my fix work perfectly. Good luck.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was able play with the settings and get it to sound better but I still hear the rattling when a song comes on with some bass. I'll take it to the dealer and have them play with it as there are other issues that I found in the last few days. My bt keeps disconnecting while I'm on the phone (samsung galaxy s4) and I can't get Aha to appear in my menu. Also, there's a constant squeak in the engine and the brakes. The brakes in particular are very, very loud.

Again, thanks for all the suggestions. In my opinion, the 997.1 Bose is far superior to the stock 991 sound system.
