Moving from an M3 to a 991S
Moving from an M3 to a 991S
Hey guys, new member here - apologies if this question has been asked before but I can't find anything.
I wanted to get some feedback on any E9X M3 owners who moved to a 991S? I'm currently driving an 2013 e92 M3 with DCT and would appreciate some owners thoughts on the move from an M3 and perhaps a brief comparison of the driving / ownership differences?
For interest, I've specced an Agate Grey 991 C2S, Platinum Carrera S Wheels, PDK, Sports Chrono, Sports Steering Wheel, PSE, Digital Radio, Front and Rear Park Sensors and a few other options.
Thanks, Matt

I went from a c6 z06 corvette, to a 13' m3 coupe 6MT , to a c5 z06 corvette and a 13' caddy CTS, next car is probably going to be a 991S. I drove a 991s when I had my m3 and I liked the way it drove as well !
sorry I can't provide more info !

Good move! Don't worry you won't look back with regrets. I went from a Z3 to an M roadster then to my 1st 911, 12 years ago when my son suggested a car with rear seats (for a 10 yr. old).
Been a Porsche fan ever since. (Although my wife does have an X3).
No comparison imo. Enjoy and welcome!

I had a 2011 E90 M3 6MT and recently got a Carrera S Cabrio 7MT. I have a similar build to yours, but also have PDCC and Burmester. Car still has less than 1000 miles, so I haven't wrung it out yet. Quick impressions vs the M3
- Power and torque feel pretty similar in the lower end of the rev range, but there is definitely a little more in the 911 - probably a combination of a little more torque and less weight
- The handing of the Porsche is pretty incredible, but I am definitely finding that there is getting used to having the weight in the back
-The suspension absorbs bumps and rough roads much better than the M3, even in Sport Plus
- Fit/finish and the quality of the materials are far better than the M3
- For me, those M3 seats were incredible. I have the 14 way sport seats - comfy but I would take the M3 seats any day
- PCM is nice and has some better functions, especially the Bluetooth. I actually found iDrive a little easier to use than the touchscreen
Overall, there is a lot to like in the M3, but once you get in the 911 you are never going to regret the change

I switched from a 997 to an M3 and then to a 991.
My reason for switching to the M3 was lack of low end torque but the clutch damper valve drove me nuts. I know you can remove it but didn't want to void my warranty. My M3 suspension was Dinaned.
-Low end torque of my M3 is quite similar now that the 991 has increased the power.
-Handling is pretty similar but I had my suspension Dinaned in the M3 and had the competition package. Both corner like a dream.
-Clutch and manual transmission are far superior in the 991.
-The 991 has better brakes. "Big reds" are much better and fade less.
-My 18 way adaptive seats are more comfortable than the M3 seats
-Gas mileage is much better in the 991.
-M3 is more of a sleeper and has more utility for daily driver since it holds more cargo.
-I have had less quality issues so far with the M3 than my 991.
-M3 is great value for money but I love my Porsche 991. Overall, I prefer my 991 to my M3.

I liked mine too. Really just saw a good time to get out of it while the mileage was low and new ones weren't out. That said the 991 just feels like a different league shen you drive it

This brings me to another point, if I were to buy a 2012 as opposed to ordering a 2014, have there been any changes/recalls or other updates that would differentiate the two?
M3's are great cars (and more practical daily drivers), but as almost everybody else has pointed out the handling of the 991 is in another league: mainstream car refined and pushed to the max vs car designed as a sportscar from the get go. Do not hesitate for a second... or wait for the M4 (talking out of the blue, no idea what it is going to drive like).
I had a 996 and drive an e46 m3 and Lambo now
991 is much refined inside and feels better. However, it is still rear biased. If you lift gas mid corner, when a deer jumps out for example, you will end up fish tailing and likely crash it if u were pushing the car 10/10. For this reason, I will not buy another 911
M3 does everything well but has cheap interior and less reliable hvac, suspension. It is the most practical coupe with 4 seats you will find for any money with the exception of maybe Maserati grandtourismo.
In my opinion, if you push the car hard in corners, you better get yourself a DE. Otherwise, you may end up in a tree or embankment. Trust me, I have seen it and been there before

I don't tend to track my cars, but do take them on drives with scenic winding roads that lend themselves to spirited driving so the scenario of fauna jumping out is a real possibility.
