Tire pressure comfort vs protection question
SubscribeSo there was another thread about lowering the factory tire pressure settings to make the ride more comfortable. But I was wondering, being in the NE region with all the potholes developed from this winter, does having a higher pressure give you more protection or less against damage from the potholes? Anyone know?
Higher pressure reduces the shock absorbtion of the tire, so you are more likely to bend a wheel.
It is very misleading how Porsche classifies the pressure settings.
The "comfort" pressures are not low.
They are normal and still on the high side.
The "standard" pressures are rediculously high.
Perhaps they need those super high pressures on the Autobhan.

Yeah the standard pressures do seem really high..Originally Posted by lunarx

I must admit though, the ride on my 991 with PASM on and comfort pressure seems just a tad on the soft side to me.. I really expected it to be a little bit firmer at times. At times I wish I had SPASM..
I might experiment with pressures between the comfort and standard settings just to see if I like it better.

I think you are in a good position.Originally Posted by scatkins

You can switch to Sport, when you want a firmer ride and you don't have as much of a ground clearance issue.
SPASM & PDCC ride so stiff, even in standard mode.
It's not that it's a comfort problem but the chassis really gets it's bell rung when hitting bumps.
It's especially bad when cornering on rough roads.
Some extra compliance would actually help corner faster on the typical public road.
With PDCC I need to slow down for corners, to not hammer the car to pieces, on all but the smoothest roads.
I am considering setting my PSS tires at 2 less than the "comfort" settings.
I think that will put the warm pressures in a better range.

A quick increase in tire pressure will stiffen the sidewalls, and will yield the desired firmness and increase in response. Go for it. Originally Posted by scatkins

Yep, even the "Comfort" setting is on the higher side. I may also drop mine a couple of psi this coming week.Originally Posted by lunarx

The thing is .. It feels a tad soft, but when I corner hard it easily takes the turn.. So maybe I just need to find the limits..

Softer tires doesn't necessarily mean lack of cornering… you'll definitely be able to corner and drive the hell out of the car with great capability (albeit with more wear). The harder the tire/sidewall, though, the better the car will "feel" in terms of response and poise.
I used to run a set of Nitto Invos. They had endless grip and I was amazed at my car's ability to corner, but the sidewalls were extremely soft and I disliked the floaty, soft feeling.

No I wasn't attributing the softness I felt to the tires.. Just the overall ride felt a bit soft.. Originally Posted by Christophosphorus

I think with the 991 it's a combination of the electric steering. I'm just used to a sports car having a lot of steering feedback and can feel the road and the 991 has a bit less of that... So it throws me a little.. I don't think it is bad just a little different and it's taking a while to get used to.
