Gravel/Sand sound under car

I have noticed driving my car over sand/gravel in the road way that it makes an awful sound as the debris hits the underside of the car. Never heard this in any other vehicle or my 997.2. Is this something normal with the 991 or did they forget some padding?

Normal. There's no wheel liner in the back so all the sand rocks that get kicked up hit the mufflers etc.

Unfortunately it's normal for every 991 including turbo. It's very annoying. If you look under the rear wheel wells, it's mostly metal, little plastic, no undercoating and the entire back half has nothing except the metal engine stuff and mufflers. Maybe to reduce weight or enhance service access when the bumper is removed? It was the first thing I noticed dropping off my 997 and driving out with my 991.

Probably to enhance cooling too I would think...but yeah, it's a bit of a surprising and disturbing sound when it happens...I still haven't gotten used to it

It's probably my only complaint with the car so far. Drives me nuts. It ruins the "high end" experience somewhat for me.

I don't know why Porsche doesn't use the "fuzzy" wheel well liners like most other manufacturers. It dramatically cuts down on noise.

I considered putting Dynamat on the back of the plastic liners but it's expensive and heavy. I also considered the spray on undercoating/sound deadening on the outside of the plastic liner.

Unfortunately, I think most of the noise, certainly the worst, is from the open mufflers.

I'm still considering options. Gotta be something we can do.

Weld some brackets on those side mufflers and add fuzzy wheel well liners.
Buy a liner from x car and cut to fit.
You could remove them for track days, to restore cooling.

Keep this thread up and soon there will be a configurator option for leather or alcantara wheel liners, with deviated stitching to match the interior.......

I got a small pebble caught in the rear suspension that was causing a bad noise going over bumps. I suspect this lack of lining was the root cause of the pebble getting way up into my suspension. Dealer replaced struts and re-torqued the suspension first after they got the Porsche Factory Tech involved but finally found a burnished rock that was the fix.

Hope it doesn't happen again. Car was in the shop for almost two weeks while they sorted this out with PCNA.

Been experiencing this a lot too. They've been doing construction on the street I work at and it's definitely unpleasant to drive on. I literally go a quarter mile down the road at 10 mph and you can still hear rocks hit the underbody every second.

the gravel/stones noise is something I noticed right away and it is unsettling. I always cringe a little because I know the car is getting pelted. It's especially bad right now after the winter sand/debris all over the road. I go about 5mph out of my neighborhood right now because I can't stand the sound!

This is horrific and horrible to hear. I wish there was an option for fixing this, but I suspect anything put into the wheel wells would melt or possibly interfere with the car in some way--and frankly it's not worth it.

Arghh, another reason to wish for summer, clean roads!
