991 C2, New M4, or somthing else?
Baby hauler will become toddler/pee wee hauler
Once I donated all infant goodies, I put a deposit on a Cayman S... until I brought my 5 year old son to the dealership and he asked why he could not get in. That pathetic face made me realize how much fun it would be to share the Porsche experience with the kids (as my granddad did with me). I came home with a cabrio C2. The 90 minute drive home with wind in our hair, my son and I were grinning ear to ear.
It's a sports car yet you can spot a handful of these at pee wee games.

These are the kinds of comments that really turn me off from buying a Porsche. Are you an actual car enthusiast or just a Porsche fanboy? An R8 doesn't come close to the handling of a 991?, are you being serious?
I have been a member of many car forums, however I find the 991 section on this forum to have more than a few Bougie clowns who assume/think the 911 is the end all and be all of all sports cars. (the turbo variant?, maybe, but certainly not a base 911, or S model. The fact that this car comes with a "sport exhaust option" so you can hear the exhaust more is enough to make you wonder how much of a "real sports car" it's is. Next I assume you'll mention you drove a $120,000 (because you love throwing $$$$$ figures out there) Dodge Viper and the acceleration was nowhere near as impressive as c2s, lol
Look, the 991 is a gorgeous car, I plan on buying one but let's be honest, you are paying an astronomical dollar amount for a car that's really not all that impressive numbers wise.....get off your high horse, "911, doesn't come close to an R8, GMAFB"

Read the entire thread. And take your meds.
This type of thread surfaces from time to time on various forums and the arguments repeat themselves as well. The usual suspects emerge here and a budget is also mentioned (nothing wrong with a budget but it influences the debate when many of the cars mentioned are well above the number). Someone above derided the "Porsches are not numbers cars" point, but bringing in the budget means the "not a numbers car" idea is now central to the whole argument.
The op mentioned he does not want a non-German car (eliminates the C7) and he thinks the Cayman is underpowered (eliminates the GTS). I think, given those statements and budget, the choices in the poll are logical. The M4 horsepower and torque are both well above a C2 and the weight looks similar. For myself, given a similar budget, I took a different approach and got a (highly optioned) CPO C2S. For the op, drive both and decide which one you like best.

Those of us who were driving in the late 60's and early 70's remember the slogan "road-hugging weight", as if it were a positive attribute. Unfortunately BMW and others still seem to abide by that slogan. 4000+ pounds for a 'vert "sports Car" in 2015? Unforgiveable.
And this is something Porsche will not do, at least artificially.

Before I got my 991 C2S, I debated waiting and getting the M4. I would definitely have better numbers (hp, 0-60, etc), but I'm learning its not about that. I also would have saved tons of money. So first, we have to assume the price doesn't bother you because the 911 will never be a bargain in the traditional sense.
The pros of the M3/4:
-Cheaper
-Numbers (hp and 0-60, basically bragging rights)
-Will get more looks right after coming out, but this will fade soon
-More practical
-You will have the top of the line 3-series vs "base" 911 (this is more an ego thing).
-Technologically (i.e. navigation, apps) more advanced
The cons:
-Not a ground-up sports car
-Not quite the heritage of a 911 (no other car really has it)
-Styling to me is a no brainer, but this is subjective.
-Heavy. Despite weight loss measures, Bimmerpost has the curb weight of the M3 with manual, CF roof, and ceramic breaks at 3563 lbs. Car and driver tested the C2S with PDK and ceramics at 3265. So if you equalize the two with the same transmission, the C2S is over 300lbs lighter. That means a lot. I love the idea of having a small, light car. The C2 manual weighed 3199 lbs in car and drivers test. Also, remember the weights with the 991 are with 20's. BMW only gives a 19" wheel option. Add 20's, which I would, means more money spent than initially anticipated and more weight.
-The engine/exhaust noise in the M3/M4 seems a bit contrived.
All this said, I think the Ms will be amazing cars. They always are and the M3 was always one of my dream cars. You will be happy with either as long as you base the decision on what makes you happy.

- The M4 probably makes for a better DD but the 911 is practical as well. The rear seats of 911 is a bit smaller then M4 but still useable
- 991 C2S is fast or faster then M3/M4?
Thanks for the link. May I ask, have you actually driven an R8? It doesn't handle like a 991. I don't make my comments based on what I read online or in reviews. I drive the cars and come to my own conclusions. If we disagree, no problem, but that was my honest impression after driving the R8.
We have a 2011 C4S w/PDK and sports chrono plus. We also have a 2010 R8 V10 manual. The R8 has only 10K miles on it. The C4S has 11K and counting. The R8 is faster all around/better performing then the C4S.
However I enjoy the C4S as a daily driver over the R8.
