To what ridiculousness will you go?
Louis - I NEVER take more than one parking space, I agree that single act is an open door to getting keyed up. I always take corners, preferably a corner that is next to the non-space with painted diagonal lines. This way I get my corner with a little extra room to ensure that whomever parks next to the corner space has plenty of room to not ding my door.
Good call! That's exactly what I try and do - try to cheat to the free side as far as possible so even if somewhere swings their door wildly all the way there is plenty of buffer - that's the ideal space.
For most of the general public, you're an a-hole for driving a Porsche. For those that enjoy cars, there is admiration and respect. There is no way to isolate yourself completely from those that harbor ill will and contempt, but I do what I can.
Also, I saw this article on CNN.com (I was bored at work, sorry) and thought it would be already posted on this thread.... Enjoy.

Uncertain if she was driving a P-car. Or if she took a corner + bonus space.
She probably took two spaces. Who knows?

People will always judge what they don't like or jealous so you can't prevent them from doing things based on that. Then again it would be stupid to do anything to provoke people, regardless.. Just common sense. .
Taking two spots in a crowded parking lot where parking is limited is indeed being an a-hole and inviting the mentally unstable to have at.. Doing it close enough where people are walking also makes you an easy mark with a key...
Parking out by yourself and even taking two spots is not likely to upset anyone.. Although I rarely feel the need to take two spots when I'm far away.. If some one goes out of their way to do something to your car parked in the south 40, then I'm sure you are screwed no matter what.
Then again, I generally park far away in most parking lots even when not in a nice car.. I've never felt the need to circle around and get the spot as close as possible anyway. Generally I can park a ways a way and be inside before the idiot circling for the closest possible spot. it's just less stressful I've found.. even driving a beater 2001 pickup truck..
But I certain don't think that being a bit careful where I park is allowing my car to run my life as some have suggested. Sometimes it's just common sense.
But it is a matter of degree.. Not going somewhere I want to go because of my car, yeah I am guilty of that I must admit at times... I try to minimize that or work around. Usually I find a work around, take another car etc.. Probably worse when it's a new toy though.. fades after the first ding...

when self parking, I goto no mans land or I always try to find an end spot, one next to a curb., wall etc. and hug it as much as possible so im only vulnerable to one side of somebody opening their doors on me. if valeting, ive never met a valet in my life who wont let me self park in their spot and keep my keys for $10-40. obviously the higher amount would be at top tier restaurants, clubs, hotels etc.
In Los Angeles, there are a ton of good restaurants but I am limited because they are all valet only. Not the good valet mind you at like Fogo and other places down La Cienega, but $2 cheap valets who don't particularly car about your car.
I haven't had good KBBQ since.
Also, I want to see Book of Mormon before it leaves the Pantages Theater. First thought was: "where the hell am I gonna park the car?"

goto chosun galbi in ktown. its not ayce, be prepared to spend at least $50 pp on food only. best kbbq in la. give the valet $10 and ask to self park.
I take a ferry into NYC and I try to park my car as far away as possible and walk. Upon my return, I always stress until I see my car is safe and no one parked too close. Last week when I walked back to my car I saw the attached pic! My first thought was "how cool is this" wish I could always park with these guys! My car is the black one.
^^^ that is a great pic! Whenever I park at the local train station I always pick a corner spot and park very close to the edge of the lot, but the car on my one exposed side is never a 911 when I return! Usually a old model minivan of some sort. Got a nasty door ding in my old M3 from one of them . . .
