Question 991 C4S Cabrio - Rattling noise

Car is just a few weeks old. From day1 I noticed a slight rattling noise while driving with roof up. Noise comes from "somewhere" behind my right shoulder (RHD UK car). Noise is slightly annoying but not really keen for the dealer's boys to play with the roof.... Just want to know if other people have similar experience please....

Thank you

A

6 months old and no rattles anywhere. My only thing is a slight wind noise with the top up on the drivers window, but not enough to worry about. Good luck finding it.

Don't have wind noise. mine is mainly a "vibration" noise... Interesting to hear about other issues owners have with their convertible top....

I have a 2012 991 Cab and have had previous 911 Cabs. Check where the seat belts retract into. That will likely be a source of the rattle.

I have the same exact rattle. Seems to come from the top supports. Tend to hear the rattle most either going over bumps or even at high RPMs. It actually gets better when I frequent raise and lower the top, which possible points to something that is a little loose. That all said, every time I take my car in for service, I ask them to look at it, and every time they "cannot reproduce"....

I would not call mine an issue. It is just as quiet as my wife's Lexus so I can't complain about it.

My 4S Cabrio was tight as a drum after 7 mos and about 4k miles. My turbo on the other hand has a few extra creeks and minor rattles top up. I'm thinking it's because I'm usually running with the PDCC on which is quite a bit stiffer and I suppose something has to give. Bottom line, I do notice a difference between the two. I drove a turbo hardtop the other day it was night and day how much tighter it felt than even the 4S Cab.

mine is also related to the RPM of the engine... It is just annoying when I drive my wife's 4 years old Audi TT cabrio and it is solid as a rock

I had a "squeech" type sound from behind my left ear (on left hand drive car) when I went over a road crack/bump. The dealer finally diagnosed it as related to a piece of loose weather stripping . Per the service invoice: "the rear most weather strip" in the top's well". They "removed the weather strip mount , determined that the noise got louder and was the cause, lubricated the area and reassembled it" . Went away once, came back and they did it again. Bet it's one of those things that will just keep needing to be adjusted.

We have a 2012.5 c2s cab CPO purchased end Dec last year. Buzzing from centerline in the back. Ticking sound either from seatbelt or driver seat (had similar noise with 981 BS). Possible buzzing in dash but need to get other noises settled first. Finally a subwoofer related vibration on certain songs (Burmester). Went thru this drill with our 981 BS CPO, now again. Dealer visit next week so we will see. Good news is that the service manager took the 981 for several days and confirmed every noise I identified so I don't have the "chronic complainer" thing to deal with. These noises are irritating in a $130k car so I will post an update in case the info can help others. Love the car, hate the noises. And no, listening to the sweet sound of the PSE when winding up from 4500 rpm is not the answer.

As another member pointed-out in this thread, check the seatbelt "collar". it is located just behind your right shoulder on a RHD car, no? This is a common area for noise complaints -- PAG actually has an official set of Work Manuals (253 or 254 WM series, I think) relating to "eliminating noise symptoms". One of those is focused on the seat belt retention assembly where the belt enters the side panel.

Noises and rattles are not uncommon in P-Cars. For vibrations and such, PAG has an official CD "tool" for testing interiors for vibrations. And just a small example, from the PIWIS TSI a few of the interior noise related WMs:
  • Eliminating noise symptoms - Reworking front belt lock (Seat-belt buckle chafing on side bolster/SY1913)
  • Eliminating noise symptoms - Reworking front seats (side bolster chafing on centre console/SY0711)
  • Eliminating noise symptoms - Overview of materials for eliminating disturbing noises
  • Eliminating noise symptoms - Replacing all-wheel drive control unit (Rattling noise from around the front axle/SY2313)

Good luck! Curious what the dealer is going to tell you....
