Probably A dumb question on PCM navigation
Probably A dumb question on PCM navigation
Why does Porsche not offer or make it possible to install an app like Trapster or Waze on the PCM navigation system? The built-in PCM screen would be much be a much better display for showing traffic hazards and LE hazards like speed and red light cameras than an auxliary smartphone or tablet screen. Plus it is already there
Perhaps the 991.2 could use an Android or I-Phone based navigation system with the ability, with owner app installation if necessary to avoid supposed Porsche liability, to show road and LE hazards.
I have found my way very nicely for over fifty years without electronic navigation support, but would really appreciate the ability to identify potential problems ahead without the hassle of an additional makeshift onboard smartphone or tablet display. As it is, I mainly use the current PCM navigation to reduce boredom on long trips by observing my progress toward my destination.

One thing I do miss from my BMW is the ability to send planned routes from google maps on my computer to the car, or if I'm really lost and can't fiddle with the controls, having BMW assist send directions to the car. That being said, it was a feature I rarely used, so not a big loss.

Plus, as you've mentioned, there's a lot of liability if they allow you to run software that's not under their control in their car's system. It could cause other issues.

But what is ridiculous is that the only way you can get traffic info is via XM.. which puts you at the mercy of a third party service provider where you can't just buy XM Traffic ala' carte (at least when I tried).
What would have been a much better technical solution is to either integrate FM traffic (which is free) which you get with almost any 3rd party GPS (garmin etc). And/Or allow a Wifi/data connection that could be accommodated by a personal hotspot or Phone..
The answer of course is that Porsche most likely is subsidized by XM and has a vested interest in providing a substandard offering.
And lets not even talk about the POS AHA garbage..

I doubt seriously Porsche wants to integrate a multitude of apps on the PCM. To do so would be prohibitive..

AHA is crap... It works with my 3.1 PCM as delivered... I don't believe it has the ability to get Traffic information to the "traffic" screen of navigation display. If it does then I guess I missed something...
It is the iphone / android application you run on your phone that integrates with the PCM.. It provides you with internet bases features on the PCM like streaming media, Facebook, twitter etc.
So you can control those applications from the PCM display as well as streaming the audio output to the car audio system.
In reality, most folks who like to listen to streaming music seem to just instead run pandora (or whatever) on their phone and connect as an aux (or I think BT aux source). And I'm not sure there's anyone who wants to use twitter or facebook by interacting with their PCM.. easier to just use the phone for that.
What I had hoped was that it it would be able to feed the Navigation system with traffic info and congestion information on the MAP. But when I tried it after getting my car, I couldn't find any of that capability. streaming music isn't all that important to me, but if I were I'd just use pandora, and I can't find any value in trying to fiddle with Facebook on the PCM display, much easier to just use the iPhone app.
So bottom line I could find no reason to use it and deleted it. Which based on everyone I've talked to is pretty typical. I've seen comparable features on other cars (Toyota has another app they use, which is just as crappy and as far as I can tell no one uses it).
maybe it's gotten better, not sure but I for the life of me could find no value.

Just go to the apple or android app store and search for AHA you will find it quickly the app is free. Unfortunately after loading it and trying it, you will decide quite quickly it is a waste of time and delete it off your phone.
Not sure when you tried, but I am in the US and a year ago i bought traffic service (a la carte) from Sirius XM. $4 per month or so.
Putting aside the "is it any good" question, I was told by my dealer quite a while ago that this is not possible if your car was an early production car; the h/w does not support it. Has something changed?
