How Early is Too Early For Annual Service?

Need advice from you folks. My delivery date was September 27, 2014. My annual service is due next month but I am hearing noises from the rear end when I back in or out of my driveway that sounds like metal on metal grinding. Looked under the car and checked the exhaust, nothing I can see visually. The noise is not there going over speed bumps. FYI, six months ago they replaced a strut that was OK only to find a pebble in the suspension. I had a campaign done last month for some hose to the exhaust issue.

Anyway, long story short, I prefer to only bring the car in once, is 45 days too early for performing an annual service?

I would say 320 days early is maybe a touch too soon for the annual service.

If there is a possible mechanical problem with the car that you want the dealer to diagnose, that's a separate issue which doesn't follow a schedule.

Never too early, but you can end up being too late.
Just take it in and have the problem fixed.
Most likely they'll ask you if you'd like to have your scheduled service done at the same time.

Sorry, the delivery date was September 27, 2013, not 2014...my proofreading skills need to be improved

We all assumed. If you had those skills you'd be a rich man and not be too worried about a whole lot.

OP: It's all good. Just go check it out at the dealer. Sometimes with stuff like this I will pay a cheap, local mechanic $20 to just put it on his lift so I can take a look myself and see if anything is amiss.

OK, the plot thickens. If I rev the engine and you hear some backfiring and popping noises as the car returns to idle. Sounds like "back-pressure" in the exhaust system. Makes me wonder about that recall campaign last month WE12 for the exhaust hoses that was performed. Maybe some hose popped off or the exhaust needs work.

Dealer has no loaners until next week.

This has been a royal PITA. The vehicle is OK but PCA promoted their best mechanic. My car was in the shop for 6 weeks since delivery. Might be time to go elsewhere for warranty work.

Seriously? Your car seems fine. I assume you have the PSE? why is it a pain? The noise you hear when you start out are your cold brakes, not too worry.

It is a pain because it has been in the shop for about 6 weeks in the first year since delivery: passenger seat replaced for recall, Burmester amp failed, PCM replaced (unnecessarily), air/oil separator replaced and a pebble stuck in rear suspension but they replaced the a strut instead but didn't need to. I just had the MDM display problem and they did that update plus 2 others. The security guard at work is always kidding me about the car because of how many loaners he sees. This is a combination of a subpar service department and quality control issues. I love the car BUT it is a time bandit. My 997 was better. Now just a month before scheduled service this happens. It was in a month ago for the MDM failure.

To answer your other question and comment: I don't have a PSE. This is a new exhaust noise and sounds like a back pressure in the system from a leak. The original grinding noise going in or out of my driveway can't be cold brakes because it happens when I come home after 30 minutes of driving. I wish it was that simple. Car goes in Monday.Wish me luck.

Understood but hopefully simple stuff. If it is any conciliation I've owned many makes and none are perfect. Like you said it sounds more like a sub part service center. Good luck and please report back.

Those are issues when you buy a new car, house... many other things. Regardless, if there were ANY unusual noises that developed on one of my cars, it would be in the shop immediately. There's no reason to wait for a developing issue to get worse... or catastrophic. It's under warranty so drop it off get a loaner and return to pick it up when it has been diagnosed and/or repaired.

Sorry Zelig! Reading about issues like these makes me grateful that I have only had one issue in the 2 1/2 years I've owned mine.

Hope it all works out Monday.

Thank you guys. It is a great car overall. Most of the time in the shop was due to the service department. PCM was replaced (2 weeks in the shop) because they didn't read their PCNA service notices about the parking display being subject to radio interference and there is no fix. The pebble in the rear suspension cost 3 weeks in the shop. They replaced a strut that didn't need it. So 5/6 weeks was due to service department errors. They had a great mechanic but he was promoted to a field rep. I bet the noise is due to hoses coming off the exhaust from their last campaign. Fingers crossed this time.
