wheel and tire insurance

Question on wheel and tire insurance. I said yes to a $1,750 Mercedes Benz policy, unlimited miles 5 years. He explained that this was much better than other policies as it covers everything from blow outs to road rash. No deductible, no limits. I was iffy but knew that $1,750 was dealership costs to replace one Porsche rims. I only said yes because I have 60 days to cancel.

I am about to buy a set of winter rims that will costs about this much, should I just cancel knowing the risk of actually blowing a rim in the summer is low (have blown one questionable quality rim from tirerack and 2 tires over the last 10 years during the winter and none during the summer). Or cancel and buy a third party policy?

All those policies are rip offs. In my opinion.

The small chance something goes wrong, just fix it yourself. You'll save money.

In my almost 30 years of driving, there's not one time that I would have used that policy.

I love the attempted shakedown whenever buying a new car, and a list of 20 extra add-ons they want you to buy. I'm just like, skip this whole part! It's very sleazy on their part. But that's why they're stealerships.

The only thing I believe in, are certified factory pre-owned warranties.

If you break a rim, just buy a take-off on ebay. I just purchased a take-off (<1k miles) rim for $430. Also, you can likely find matching tread depth tires on ebay as well in case you get a tire that is not repairable. It might take a few days to get to you, but a dealer may have to order a tire as well in the event of a blowout.

Yea, I intended to say no, then he threw out that I could cancel it within 60 days and only said yes because of that. Are there often reports of folks blowing out OEM Porsche rims? Honestly, in the winter, I know rim destroying potholes aren't hard to find, but I will have a dedicated winter set plus spares for this price. I am just worried about blowing the 20 inch Porsche rims.

Paid around $1300 for tire, wheel, ding, towing, rental, dent and glass chip insurance

Destroyed 20 inch classic wheel: $1600 installed - rental and towing
Destroyed brand new $400 234/30/20 Michelin PSS - no towing needed
Had ding removed from rear fender

Yeah, it's generally a ripoff
Yeah, I overpaid.
Yeah, I bought it because I did not want to even think about the consequences of driving on Pennsylvania's finest roads.
Yeah, I bought it because I wanted to point and laugh at the broken rim or flat tire.

It's up to you.

Is that cancellation within 60 day period written in the agreement you signed? I sure hope so, but that sounds a little strange.

Depends a lot on the types of roads you drive on. However, if you are getting a dedicated winter set that will decrease the chances of a problem although where I am from, spring is the key time to damage tires with potholes.

For my some of my BMWs, the tire and wheel insurance covers all OEM sets so I was covered year round since I had a BMW winter set. On other cars where I went aftermarket for wheels, I passed on it.

The price you were quoted seems high. Just depends on whether you want to pay per incident or pay up front. Like all insurance, it's all about what level of risk you want.

The destroyed tire. I was at a buddy's garage when I noticed it and I started to laugh so hard I had to stop to catch my breath. My buddy thought I was nuts until I told him it was fully insured and he joined me in laughter

Insurance is always in the company's favor. However, wheel and tire insurance is the only one I'd consider. That price is pretty high though, I bought insurance for my wife's e350 and it was 700 bucks for the same length of time.

I think the policy cost is always higher for Porsche, and for any sports car with very low profile tires, for that matter.
