Front spoiler lip

(My apology if I accidentally posted this previously, I can't seem to find the thread so I'm guessing I didn't complete the post.. Getting old ya know..)

Looks like my front spoiler lip vanished (standard non-SPASM C2S).. Most likely my fault in not getting it secured properly after removing front bumper cover a couple of months ago.

So what's the down side of not replacing it? By not having it I save $250 replacement cost and don't scrape it on the ground continually in my driveway. Aesthetically it is hardly noticeable.

I'm sure there is some trivial aerodynamic purpose to it, but I can't seem to feel any difference in handling and have been up to probably 110 mph since loosing it and can feel no appreciable impact.

Am I missing a reason that I should go and buy a new one?

My only thought is that the front spoiler may occasionally absorb a hit that will now be taken by painted metal. My front spoiler is a mess (SPASM, so a bit lower) and I'm sure it's protected the body from some of those impacts.

I'd get it replaced, for that reason alone.

Scatkins: it may assist the airflow to be directed into the rad openings/brake ducts or something. Just my guess...

Yeah you have a point. I think I'll look at it a closer to see if that is the case. But there seem to be other ducting that does that.

But I'm guessing the lip exists more about aerodynamics to just to fine tune the airflow. Probably has some significance at very high speeds.

Yeah maybe.. But there really isn't any painted metal on the front end until you hit the metal skid/bottom that is further back. Usually when I bottom it is the bottom of the very front that takes it. Basically right behind where spoiler lip is. Luckily it is the bottom that hits and I can't really see any scraping unless you look at from underneath.

But you may have a point. The lip may help provide some buffering even if it is hitting. I notice when I bottom out now it sounds more ugly than previously with the lip on.

Ok, I'm convinced.. I'll go pay the $250 and order one from sonnen...

Pretty sure it does. The regular lip and the SPASM lip are interchangeable. I was about to have one installed on my car a few months ago, but decided against it. Dealer didn't seem to know of any problems with swapping one for the other.

It fits. It just gives it a more aggressive look and sticks out a little bit further.

it would be nice if some company would make a GT3 front lip for the c2/c4 and not charge a fortune

I replaced mine with this

http://www.suncoastparts.com/product...S_Exterioraero

FWIW it significantly - and I mean significantly changed the dynamics of the front downforce. Not bad for $179.

Yup! That's the SPASM lip. Suncoast offers it at the cheapest price, but my local dealer was only $14 more at the time.

Can you elaborate on the downforce changes? Did you notice it on the track, or on streets?

Yes both actually. The best way to describe it is to compare it to the 997 C2S I had. It seemed the faster you went in that car, the more planted it got at speed- and that was a cabriolet. The 991's front end seemed to float a little the faster you went, not a ton, but you didn't have that same planted feel. At first I thought it was the electronic steering and me interpreting it's "precision" as being sensitive. My dealer suggested the lip more for aesthetics, but when I saw it I thought, who knows, even if it helps a little, it'll be an improvement.

On my way home from the install I pass a gradually increasing radius turn - it's about 1/2 mile. Between the floating front of the car and the 20 inch tires, this would normally be a somewhat depressing jaunt. Well suffice to say after the lip install the front of the car was nailed down to the road- I felt so much more in control and now was only limited by tire patch. The car is completely transformed- I can't imagine what it must be like with the sport design package.

I then had a chance to take the car to Monticello in NY- it was UFB. Can't tell you how this little thing transformed the car. I also had the SD side mirrors installed - they look great and all the whistling is gone.

I hope that helps!! Merry Christmas everybody!!
