First year service
First year service
I'm due for the 1 year service. So as far as I know, I only need to do an oil change. I asked around for a quote for an oil change. A dealer responded with this:
Is this all necessary or just normal dealership bs?
Every year or 10k miles, your vehicle is due for the oil and filter service, body drains get cleaned, and a multi-point inspection consisting of but not limited to: checking/topping off all fluids, checking/adjusting tire pressure, measuring the tire tread depth, checking the wear pattern of the tires to assure your alignment is good, checking all operating systems and components, measuring the brake pads and inspection of the rotors and we check the battery charging system.
The estimated total for this annual maintenance is $565.00

We have this exact same thread repeat every few months... Each time a new owner gets to his first service... Yes it is expensive, but don't allow yourself to be overcharged..
1) For a dealer service, shop around.. You should be able to get it for about $250... Your quote was very high even for a p car dealer...
2) A good Indy will do it for less than $200
3) Me, I do it myself for about $48. (~8 quarts M1, filter, o-ring gasket and a crush washer.. Get the Mobil one from Walmart for $26/5 quarts)

Apologies for the repeated thread, but I tried to do a search and did not really find what I needed. I guess my question really was, for 1st year service, can I just get away with a oil change or are the additional "checks" mentioned by the dealer really necessary?
The additional checks are usually customary for the dealers workshops. Ask for itemized list of services but I'd say it's worth it, get it done after a year. I recall that I negotiated much of it off other than the oil
Because it is freakin' highway robbery. My first year service on my 911 TTS was $231.
It would be unfair to say they have no value, but they are very simple and quick.. The most important ones are those you should already be doing yourself as a owner/driver anyway... (Checking fluids, belts and looking for leaks)... But at one year it isn't likely anyone is going to find anything significant....
My recommendation on these kinds of thing is that if you are the type of owner who is reasonably mechanically aware and typically keeps an eye on things (fluids, tire pressures, leaks, noises etc) then you probably already have it covered.... If you are the type that just fills with gas and couldn't be bothered with these kinds of things then it's good to get a more comprehensive and thorough service..
I just noticed you are in NYC, that explains it. Drive over the GWB to Towne Motors in Englewood, NJ (10 mi from midtown). You will get it done (with all the inspections) for under $300. The dealer will be happy to find warranty items to repair as things are slow for them now as most cars are tucked away or driven very little now according to them. I received an email from them offering a free diagnostic inspection a few weeks ago. Frank C.

Mine, done on 11/19/2014:
Oil & Filter $189.75
Labor 85.00
O-Ring 8.55
Oil-filter insert 24.74
Alum seal ring 1.46
8 Qts 5w40 70.00Shop supplies & Hazardous waste disposal 24.68
The oil & filter service included topping off fluids and setting tire pressures. I also had tires mounted and balanced which might have contributed to that 24.68. Assuming not, my total ~ $215.
Multi point inspection 0.00
Prestige Porsche, near Denver. Kinda far for you, though....

Yep, $48 when I change oil and filter every 10,000 miles.. And $33 when I just change just the oil every 5,000. (However at the initial 5,000 miles I change oil and filter. )
The math...
1) Filter = $14.35
2) Crush Washer = $0.53
3) Total Oil cost me $33 (stocked up on 5Q containers from wall mart a while back @ $22.which works out to about $4.4/Q When I checked on line recently I saw $26 so maybe a little higher but when I see a good deal on it I buy a couple of cases ). So if I were to go and buy it at this moment it would have been a total $40.42 for 7.5Q.
I used about 7.5 Quarts which is about all I could get out in 45 minutes. I could leave it trickling for a couple hours but I change every 5000 miles so I don't worry about every last drop. And during the 45 minutes and while I have it up on Jacks... I check out all the major items that would be on the "check-list".. Inspect hoses, belts, brakes lines... look for leaks etc. If there are any fluids to top off I do them then.
Also I use real Porsche filters which I get through Sonnen... You can get the identical filters that are not porsche branded from Mahle-Knecht (the OEM filter manufacture) for about $10 if you search around.
Total $47.88 for oil change...
However I must admit I had several extra O-rings for the filter which I believe is about $5. So including that my total cost would have been $52.53. (But if I used the non-Porsche branded, but same OEM filter I'd save since the filter + O-Ring together are about $14.50 Total instead of about $20).
After the first Oil change, I only change the filter every 10,000 miles and the oil at 5,000... So the in between changes just cost me $33...
However I don't include the cost of a beer while I'm waiting for the oil to drain

So the difference between the $250 (the max I'd ever actually pay for an oil change and the oh so important 100 item check at a dealer) and my $50 oil change... is about $200 which I take my wife out to dinner...
