Another Exhaust Question...Non-PSE and AWE SwitchPath

sorry, in advance as i know there are a ton of exhaust threads. i searched and read through a bunch of other threads but didn't quite get my answer questioned.

i had a 2012 911 C2 that i added PSE to after purchase. i got quite addicted to that sound as well as the ability to silence the exhaust as i put a lot of highway miles on the car for work.

i recently traded that car for a 2013 C2S cab, non-PSE car. after reading reviews i want to add the AWE SwitchPath exhaust along with the PSE switch and vacuum lines. will these work together since my car is originally a non-PSE car? i don't quite understand the differences in valve locations between non-PSE and PSE cars. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Since you have an "S" car, the COV and vacuum lines are already in place, and "automatic" opening and closing of the valves is governed by your engine RPM range. The only 2 differences between the PSE and non-PSE "S" exhaust configuration is the console switch (to override the "automatic" feature) and the center muffler. The vacuum hoses need to be a bit longer for the PSE due to the location of the valves on the center muffler -- may also be the case for the AWE.

Here's a side-by-side pic of the two exhaust configurations from the PET catalog....
First diagram is the "Standard" "S" car exhaust, second is the PSE.

When upgrading an S car with standard S exhaust to PSE, the center muffler is replaced, along with adding the console switch. So effectively when adding the AWE SwitchPath exhaust to that same car you are doing the same thing -- but you will need the console switch box and programming from the dealer.

Mechanically, adding the SwitchPath to a PSE car is well-documented on this forum and very much a simple DIY. Adding to a non-PSE S car should be nearly the same. AWE has a version for non-PSE cars I think, but if you are going to add the switch console get the PSE-equipped version.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

thanks plenum for the diagrams. they are super helpful.

i assumed the same thing, ie i should buy the AWE for PSE equipped cars since i plan to add the PSE switch. however, i called and talked to two different suppliers of AWE and got different answers. one swore i should get the AWE for Non-PSE cars even if i plan to add PSE as the difference in AWE packages is related to the inherent hardware on a PSE car vs non-PSE car. i am going to call AWE again on monday and try to get a straight answer. thanks again for the help!

I have a non-PSE car.
How much does the PSE switch retrofit, programming, with the vacuum tube install cost?
Will most Porsche dealers do this?

i had PSE installed on my previous 991 C2 as stated above. it costs more for a non S car compared to an S car. i payed close to $4k which is way too much. if you have an S, you can get the parts piece by piece and have them installed for probably around $2k. i would think all dealers can do this, but some will probably charge more. below is a link to a great thread 911cv started about PSE installation.

I did this switch, non-PSE to PSE with an AWE exhaust. Here's the parts list (Switch # may be different, this was for my set-up) Dealer did the complete install.

Yes when in question just contact AWE directly. Regarding S standard exhaust to PSE exhaust, from what others have already discovered the only direct change is replacing the center muffler. The SwitchPath is the same approach- keep side mufflers and swap-out the center muffler. Just like adding an X-pipe.... And this can be done by the average DIY'er in their garage (see Money365's Journal for excellent pictorial). What others have already mentioned to also be aware of is that you may need to lengthen the vacuum hoses or reconfigure. Other than that I don't recall there being any other difference in direct install of the AWE.
As for the console switch - you can purchase and install yourself just as easily (see my DIY- there is a single cable) but will need the dealer to program so that the switch actually works.

You can add PSE functionality to the AWE Exhaust for Non-PSE cars. The only difference between SwitchPath™ for PSE and Non-PSE is the vacuum lines.

For non-PSE cars, is it better to add PSE functionality at the dealer first, and then install the aftermarket exhaust, or have the dealer add the PSE button after the exhaust is already installed?

Also, I am wondering if the local dealer will install the aftermarket exhaust for me....I called one in the bay area and he balked at doing anything non-Porsche. They will only do PSE

thanks for the help everyone.

super50, i don't know the answers to your questions. i do know that my dealer will have to order the exhaust through their parts department and be 'approved' if you will. i now that they have done installs of aftermarket exhausts before.
