From 991 to 981BoxterGTS

I've been fortunate enough to own several Porsches over the last few years, including an '06 BoxsterS w/manual, an '09 Cayman w/PDK, a '13 Boxster w/PDK, and currently a '14 991 w/manual, which extenuating circumstances led me to be able to purchase at a very good price.

I've also owned a '79 911SC for 16 years.

Now that I'm driving the 991 as pretty much a daily driver, I find myself missing the open air feeling and mid-engine handling of the Boxster.

I am on the brink of ordering a BoxsterGTS w/manual, configured just the way I want it.

In some ways I feel like I'm backing up (maybe it's the iconic nature of the 911), but, at the same time, I feel like I am progressing in to what a true and proper Porsche really can be.

Any thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Get the car you enjoy driving most.
981 is a great Porsche and very much a sports car.
I drove them and liked them.
Kind of wrestling with the thought of a GT4 trade, as some on here have already done.

Yes, do what makes YOU happy...doesn't matter what car it is. It could be a Pinto! If that is what makes you happy and you enjoy driving it, well, that's all that matters!

Get your Boxster, drop the top, and enjoy life!

Having owned all those cars, would YOU be the best person to tell us your question?

Agreed. It's about what you want and not anyone else.

Points well taken. Especially yours, chuckbdc.
Thanks to you all.
Yeah, I guess I do know from experience.
That is why I'm considering changing, and I'm the type who drops the top if it's 50 or above. Sometimes even cooler.
I must say, my 991 is a great car. The 7sp manual is has a bit of a rubbery feeling compared to the 981 6sp, but otherwise I see it as the perfect evolution of my 911SC.

I had a 2008 Boxster RS 60 Spyder and loved it. It was a tad too small interior - wise for me but drove superbly. Handling - wise that thing is up against the 991 I had. Fun car!

Do it, nothing beats driving topless on cool days. I've been doing that for the last decade, can't see myself not owning one. If I can have only one sports car, it would be a roadster. As good as the 991 is, it feels heavy and big compared to the 981. The neutral handling of a mid engine car can't be beat. It might be slower but it's just as much fun.

OP: The other way to go is keep the 991, since it's an amazing daily driver and you'll probably take a beating on trade-in. Instead, add an open air G-series, 964, 912, etc.

Personally, all modern (DFI) NA Porsches feel pretty similar to me. Of course some have more power than others but unless you like to turn off the electronics and go-sideways, the 991 feels pretty mid-engine.

Such a true statement. Many get hung up on the motor being in the wrong place but when for example you compare a 991 with a R8, many prefer the 991. I also have a 981 and while it is a little easier to drive on the track, I prefer the handling personality of the 991. On the street it is a non issue unless you are taking big risks.
