Exhaust sound S vs C4S vs GTS
Exhaust sound S vs C4S vs GTS
Hi all
Can anyone discuss if there are any exhaust sound differences between these three cars with or without factory sport exhaust?
I was told that a C4S sounds different than the C2S but have no idea why there would be any difference?
Thanks,
Anil.

Who told you this?
Really disappointing, for a dealer to tell you that. But maybe he simply meant that one of the cars had PSE and the other did not...
The difference is only whether the S car has PSE or not, and doesn't matter if a C2 or C4 (S cars are all 3.8 engine). The base 3.4 991 will sound different from S cars without PSE AND cars with PSE because center muffler and side mufflers are different in the base 3.4 (LOL unless the 3.4 is optioned with PSE!).
Also, consider whether one had the powerkit or not. That might be the only difference I can think of in engine tone between two S cars with PSE or without.
Everyone confused now?

The GTS is supposed to sound even meaner than the non GTS models. But I can't say I've heard it in person.

I'm not sure if you're guessing that's the case and frankly I don't know, but reviews and Porsches own promotional video states the acoustics have been tuned for the GTS specifically.
From an interview on FlatSixes, Friederich Seiler, PAG Engine Tuning Engineering Manager: "The Powerkit's revised intake manifold was responsible for somewhere around 50% of the power gain, replacing the engine's standard plastic intake for a custom made complicated dual-plenum aluminum intake. It is difficult to describe in words, but there is a large flapper at the top of the intake tract to keep the left bank separate from the right bank until higher RPM, and then a little flapper in each of the cylinder runners that opens up to take advantage of oscillating tube pressure at high RPM to provide a less restrictive flow to each cylinder above . The way it was described, it basically allows the air that is pushed back from the closing of an intake valve to flow into other open cylinders, rather than providing a pressure differential that prevents high flow from entering each cylinder unimpeded. This system is said to help promote torque through shorter intake runners at low RPM, and then when open, allows more horsepower at higher RPM.
For the other 50% of the power gain, Porsche had to get really creative. To help promote greater flow, Porsche took the standard cylinder head from the Carrera S parts bin and simply optimized it for use in the Powerkit equipped GTS. The intake and exhaust ports have both been extremely smoothed by a new process. Porsche essentially created a viscous paste, similar to a lapping compound, and they just push this paste through the tracks of the cylinder head until they are super smooth and don't impede airflow as much. The intake camshafts were also replaced with units that provide a higher valve lift and longer duration."
The second part makes it sound like there are bits specific to the GTS, but what is described I believe is true for the Powerkit option, in general. Anyone care to correct me on this?
