Porsche 991 Update Article/Pics

Here's the most current information I've seen on the refresh. Images were provided by Porsche for the article. Looks like the turbo engines are coming for the refresh.

Not much HP increase but it comes in lower in the range and the torque of +44 is good to see. I'll drive one to see if it worth the second look.

Turbo 911

So when will the regular 911 with a turbo engine be released for sale. I have heard the end of 2016 now the AutoCar article says it will be a 2018 model when all 911s go turbo.

So what is the actual release date?

This is going to really open up the aftermarket options for these cars, prepare to see big horsepower cars with aggressive tunes, more denied warranty claims, and many blown motors.

This will be the rich guy version of an STi

The comment of using the same cylinder displacement shows the 3.0L six results in a 2.0L four. With typical Porsche sharing development and costs, then the mentioned 2.5 four would turn out to be a 3.75L six…just about the current 3.8L six and enough to power the next top-of-the line turbos.

Can't wait to hear the new engine at full throttle and up to the redline. +44lbs torque is decent (not by any means "magical" or worth upgrading on that number alone), but I can't imagine preferring the new FI engines over an NA 3.8 screaming to ~8k.

We'll see how this goes.

It's good that they kept a relatively high redline, 7500 rpm. I'll be curious as to the sound of this thing and the S displacement. Four-wheel steering is a good plan; it will differentiate the car better. Interior changes look small, that new steering wheel, Meh, don't really care. It's a good refresh if you like turbo torque.

I'm interested to see the new turbo cars. I am fortunate to have owned 4 previous Porsche TT cars the last being a 997tt with VTG turbo technology. The car was lightening fast and the lag greatly reduced with the new turbo technology and I can't believe that better available tech like electric assist will only make lag almost indistinguishable.

I have owned Porsches through their issue stages and dealt with RMS issues and "2nd gear pop out issues" but was never disappointed with how my issues were resolved (Porsche replaced a tranny for me in 3 days when I had the pop out of gear issue no cost to me on a TT).

Do I love my NA 4S, absolutely but would I look at and evaluate the next generation, absolutely. Will it be different, most likely will it be bad, most likely not. This is their flagship they won't f### it up. I'm patient, I'll wait and if I don't like it I'll stay with the 4S I love right now. Either way I won't go 1st year as it seems the 2nd year cars get all the small issues dealt with.

Turbo torque will help the 911 in comparison test but..

Wait - the current cars basically won them all anyway!

I have had BMWs and Mercedes that switched to turbo. They all say the same thing - no lag etc.. Yet there's lag. And what's worse IMHO is that the turbo torque is flat as Kansas - so the amount of shove remains constant as the engine revs. BMW 335i is a prime example. Objectively superior, subjectively inferior.

I'm sure Porsche will do a great job with the tech. They are the guardians of automotive soul as far s I'm concerned, but...

What about the 911 Turbo? Its a moniker, an icon. Now every 911 will be a "turbo". I'm sure a good percentage of turbo owners were motivated by the car's place at the top of the 911 food chain (in most people's eyes). Doesn't that get diluted now? Is the only difference between a 991.2 4S and a Turbo going to be boost? Porsche better come up with something of a halo version to replace the turbo. "I got a 911 8 cylinder". Something...?? Turbo Hybrid with 1000 hp?

Maybe that new 4.0 liter will have twin turbos for the TT/S cars. Now that would be fun.
Maybe less boost more Hp/tq.

The will probably come up with something on the PCS display that winks at the owner and badging that lights up or something for the TURBO turbos!
