My 2012.5 991 S has a tapping sound when I started up today and it was only 50 degrees in my garage. I never had that happen in the past three years.
Anyone have any advice they can tell me. IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN ITS FIRST STARTED IN THE COLD THEN STOPS AFTER ABOUT 5 mins

A "tapping sound" is a pretty general description- could be a lot of things. One possibility is DFI.

My 2012.5 C2S sometimes starts with tappet ticking sounds like my 911SC (with solid lifters) made when it needed a valve adjustment. I took it to the dealer the day after I got the car, in February 2012. They advised it was the fuel injectors of the high pressure direct fuel injection (DFI) and perfectly normal. Whatever, it has had no issues.

 

My 2013 991 makes the same sound here in Chicago in the cold. My 2007 Cayman (X2) also made the sound. Seems to disappear after a few minutes. No issues here.

 

I believe it is normal. Mine does it too in cold temperatures. It will also do when it sits for a long time without running.

 

Hydraulic lifters had drained and needed to pressurize. I had the same thing happen twice after sitting for a while. Discussed at length with my dealer's service manager and nothing was out of the ordinary. It's certainly quite a racket for five minutes!

The fuel injector sound is a different tapping. That's more "normal" and is because the injectors are closing back with such force.

 

Sounds normal.
