Gear Shift Assistant
Gear Shift Assistant
Just curious----do all manual transmission cars have the option for the gear shift assistant in the main menu? For some reason, it's not available on my list of menu options. Thanks!
Not all of them. Around 2013.5 or 2014 (iirc), all manuals now have shift assistant as standard and you can't disable it.
I was able to disable it on my 2013; I can't disable it on my 2016.
You know, I may be mistaken. I assumed you were talking about the little "upshift arrow/triangle" we have that occasionally pops up. See here: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...indicator.html.
Now that I re-read your question, I believe you're talking about this feature: http://www.porscheownersmanuals.com/..._114_img_1.jpg.
If that's the case, I'm not exactly sure which model year it was introduced. It should show up as a main menu option while cycling through the pages. If it doesn't, try checking in "Settings" from the main page and see if you've checked all the boxes that you can select/unselect to be shown.
Yes, I have that little up shift arrow/ triangle. What I am talking about is the feature you are referencing in your middle paragraph. I don't have this listed as an option to turn on. It probably wasn't available for my car. Thanks for the feedback!
I just found this in an Edmunds article:
"The Sport Chrono package (standard on the GTS and Turbo S) adds a hard-core Sport Plus driving mode that includes a racy shift program and launch control on PDK cars, while manual 911s with this package get an amusing "Gearshift Assistant" gauge that tells you when to."
I don't have the sport chrono package, so that probably explains it. I wish the manual would just put asterisks next to some of these features, with a highlighted explanation.

Ah, that does explain it.
For what it's worth, you're not missing out on anything IMO. I've never used the feature and I've been driving 991s for three years. I tried it out while tracking at Willow Springs once, but it took about 10 seconds to switch back to the temp monitors or tire pressure page.
One thing to note that some people haven't noticed: The tachometer in our cars is designed in such a way that our redline rests perfectly at the 3PM position. So, when the tach needle is almost flat horizontally around 7600RPM, it's time to shift. It's a great visual cue if you're not used to shifting by the engine note already.

Yes, I was going to add that the tach, alone, should be enough of a "gearshift assistant." Every now and then, when I have time, I go through the manual and fiddle with some of the options. When I saw this, I started looking for this----more of a novelty than anything else. I'm sure I probably would not use it as well, if I had it. Thanks again for your input!
