Thinking of getting a cabriolet
Thinking of getting a cabriolet
Do straight guys drive convertibles?
Some guys have a stigma about guys in convertibles. I'd like a convertible, but it's weird hearing some guys call it a chick's car or gay. I also read something about a yellow convertible being a gay icon. Some guys think a convertible is too showy. My own brother would never get a convertible. Help me understand the culture that shines a negative light on men in convertibles.
Anyway I'm looking at a 991 cab possibly a 4s. Are there any other convertibles that work out for tall men? (6'4" with long torso)

I think that image (convertible = homosexual) must be local to your social circle. It's not common, and I've lived in more than ten different states in the USA.
I had a convertible in college and had half the cheerleading team in it at one point. I had a Honda S2000 for a while too. Happily married. My friends all liked the cars and frankly wished they had one too.
I have heard people say "hairdresser's car" to describe small convertibles with small low powered engines (Miata for example). That's a bit stupid but is still something I hear from time to tine.
If today you think convertibles are effeminate and you wouldn't be able to enjoy one, you could never buy one, but I'd get past that attitude, buy what you want, and enjoy life. It sounds like senseless bullying type BS was fed to you. Often those pushing garbage like that have no self confidence or are parroting it from some tough kid from the 6th grade schoolyard.
On a different note, as a tall guy, a small convertible might look out of place. At 6'1 I was almost too tall for the S2000 - the top of my head was almost higher than the windscreen. I seriously considered lowering the seat. At 6'4 you might have trouble fitting in some cars, convertible or not.

Thanks guys, this is the answer I was hoping for.
Is the 911 big enough for a tall man? Because I can only fit in the 911 and the bentley continental. All other convertibles I am eye level with the sun visor or I can see slightly above.
Maserati quattroporte is a great fit, and I get in the 2 door convertible and I'm suddenly too tall.
I don't fit in an aston martin, boxster, corvette, R8, any Jag convertible, F430 and 360 either.

Here is a post about a convertible v6 mustang and the OP is getting grilled over it.

While a V6 convertible mustang is a far better than average car on the road, he still got hated on. It's part convertible hate, but mostly V6 hate too. I rented a V6 mustang convertible once. It was a lot of fun, but when accelerating fast the tires would spin instead of the car moving forward and it didn't do well on turns.

Seriously are we debating this. I am also sure if you drove a light blue VW Beetle convertible it would be the same. It has nothing to do with vert or not. It has everything to do with the car.
If this were true man there are A LOT of gay guys in SoCal that are living in denial. Me for one I better tell my wife after 24 yrs I am actually gay.

I'm not debating and if I was to debate I'd defend convertibles, I've wanted a convertible since I was a kid. I also want to save myself from a possible trainwreck if there really is anything to it. I was looking for a consensus from actual car guys instead of guys with a low self esteem.

interesting, back in the day I had a Triumph TR6 and MGB, both thought to be cool convertibles for guys, fast forward I had the second generation BMW Z4 3.0 and was teased as being a "hair dressers car", before I bought the 991 I was initially looking a the MB SL550, the SL seems to be neutral, or back in the day "Playboys" car, so go figure, I see lots of guys driving Miatas, but the MB SLK is considered more of a females car
as always buy and drive what you like....
The only reason I can fit is because I can recline into the back seat unlike a boxster, and the 991.2 steering wheel seems a little smaller, the first 991 would rub my thighs too.

I'm not implying there is anything wrong with being gay, nor driving a chick's car. I'm implying people take a lot of crap for a car with a persona. I don't understand that culture therefore asking car guys if there is in fact something to it, or just jealous haters.

FYI, one of the persons that use to tease me about the Z4, bought one about 4 years after I got rid of mine, so I had to ask "I thought you considered it a hairdressers car"?? Reply: I know I know, but I got a good deal and it is fun to drive, so take it for what its worth.
You will love it. Top is rarely up. You will fit no problem.
