First 2 weeks in the 991.2
First 2 weeks in the 991.2
I have just under 1k mi on my new chariot. I ordered a base manual in Agate with tinted brake lights, black LED headlights, glass roof, black badges and satin black Carrera S wheels. Its a GTS jr.
My first impressions (most pronounced first):
1. The engine sound. It's fine in sport, sport + mode, but I think its the sound symposers and exhaust pops that make it so. The actual organic sound of the engine is very muted. This is not a fatal problem, but coming from the 991 with PSE is a BIG change.
2. The midrange torque (perhaps combined with the wider front track) is enough to break traction in a corner on full throttle(many variables here of course). Lets just say the 991 never had a problem overwhelming its rear tires on dry pavement in a slight bend. The torque shove is very nice and feels on par with a N/A Carrera S - as many magazines have observed.
3. The car rides lower - I never had PASM before. Its a slightly better ride quality than my base 3.4 991.1 on 20s while at the same time being more buckled down. It's definitely a sharper razor. Oddly, the suspension on "sport" feels better to me over all but totally broken pavement. I love a firm ride when the car is solid.
4. The little improvements of buying the newest version of a car that's been out for a while. For example, the keyless go is one touch (it may have been before - I never had the option previously). The backup camera is nice to have. The lighter clutch is easy to modulate and the steering is definitely a bit more communicative than the 991.1
Many things to like about the car vs. what was already an amazing machine in Gen I. The true test will be how it feels driving around town al fresco (roof open & windows down) at totally legal speeds, going through the gears and listening to the exhaust. Seinfeld once said that 911s are as entertaining at 30 as they are at 130. That quality is threatened each time the car is redesigned. The 997 was pure 911. The 991 was/is luxurious by comparison but still has all the ingredients baked in. I suspect the new Gen II retains all the 991.1 character. Porsche engineers deserve credit not just for how much progress they make, but for doing so while retaining traditional character.
P.S. CarPlay is for the birds. Its Siri that limits it. Perhaps Siri will improve...? (I'm using an iPhone 7 on iOS 10.1.1)
Happy Holidays all. I'll post better pics once I take some...

Nice review, DR. Obviously the car drives straight and doesn't pull left or right.
I'm sure that Alcantara steering wheel has great grip. Please let us know how it holds up over time, I'm considering getting that on my next one. I wear gloves now because I enjoy that extra grip.

Calipers
The calipers was a must IMHO with the all black wheels. Cool thing is the newer brakes are a bit larger so they look beefy enough to be red.
I will post some pics soon. I'm getting the pearl nano done soon.
Happy Holidays,

looks hot, but need more pix please.
Congrats on the new ride. I wanted a 991.2 but with 3 kids - i had to get an used 991.1 :-) However, i am happy in the end. I love the new tweaks.

Good eye. I had a shop install the clear film and they powder coated the calipers and the exhaust tips. I'm sure they will eventually offer an OEM option of black exhaust tips. I would have ordered the black door handles but they only became an option while my car was in production.

When you get tired of the Alcantera steering wheel you can get a great leather one from RRS Motorsports. I found that the Alcantera is hard to hold and after 5 years in my 911 GTS it only got worse. RRS Motorsports will customize the wheel with colors, stitching and integrate a racing stripe if you want. They also do aftermarket add-ons for the shifter boot, center console and other dash parts. rrsautogroup.com
What are your thoughts on turbo lag? Is it perceptable or annoying in any way?
Based on some reviews I've watched online, they say the Base 991.2 should have less turbo lag than the 991.2 Carrera 2S which runs more aggressive boost.
