I Failed Smog Test

If there is anyone out there in the 993TT world, please tell me what this is all about. I took my 993TT in today for a smog test, and it passed the emissions test with flying colors. I was told that I would have to go to the Porsche dealer and have them check out my on board computer. The dealer said that I would have to drive the car for 2 or 3 hours and get the motor real hot before they cold check it out. They further said that their technician could take it out and abuse it for a couple of hours to get it hot. I bet that I would pay them $150.00 to try to get my motor hot. What can I do to get a smog clearance?

I hate to redirect you to another board, but this issue has been discussed ad nauseum over on the rennlist.com 993tt board. In a thread there (posted within the last 30-60 days, I believe) someone posted the exact instructions for resetting the codes and passing the smog clearance.

Good luck.

I think John H. is on the right scent -- this sounds like the dealer is talking about emissions test "readiness" codes. It's a tedious, but relatively straightforward process of driving in a particular sequence of speeds from a cold start.

It doesn't take hours and it doesn't involve hard driving -- quite the contrary.

If you're near Redwood City, happy to help.

Cheers,
