993 turbo smoke

I have never posted anything on this thread, but really need some help.

I purchased a 1996 993TT last year June, 2011. 78,000miles (4th owner). After I bought it, I had the engined dropped resealed and spent 7k on minor replacement parts and makeing sure everything was in good shape. Since then, no problems, no leaks, perfect. Drove 500 miles since I bought the car.

2 weeks ago I took the car into the dealer for an annual oil change. Everything checked out and drove it home. Since then, haven't driven or fired the car.

Last night when I fired up the car, MASSIVE white/gray smoke was blowing out of the left exhaust pipe!! Didn't stop after 5min.

Last thing I want to do is to drop the engine and spend $$$$$$.

Anyone have any idea of what is wrong?

First thing you want to do is check if they installed Porsche OEM oil filters and not Mahle filters.

There is also a good possibility they overfilled the oil too, these cars are sensitive to overfilling, 9 quarts is all I put in my TT during an oil change. Hopefully no oil went into the turbochargers!

You will find very useful info on Rennlist - 993 Turbo Forum. Lots of enthusiasts and help there.

Thank you for the link and info. The oil change was done by the Porsche dealer, so I hope they use OEM parts. Sounds like I have no choice but to flat bed the car back to the dealer to see how serious this is.

Thanks again.

Many p-car dealers will use Mahle filters, this def sounds like the case esp since you just recently changed the oil. Correct do not drive the car there just to be on the safe side.

I'm not from CA but I'm sure there are many good independent shops to use for your future servicing. These cars need to be serviced by techs familiar with air-cooled cars.

Good luck!

Knight987, After 4 weeks, I finally decided to take the car into my local mechanic. Long story short, the turbos are bad, and causing the oil to get into the pips..... So now, I am getting the turbos rebuilt. Thanks for your help.

You should also look into the 996 TT check valve kit now that your re-building the Turbos. This will be a preventative measure to make sure no oil gets into the Turbos again.

Kevin at Ultimatemotorwerks.com has kit that has been crafted to fit the 993 TT.

It's seems to be very common, where mechanics suggest re-building turbos. I trust your local mechanic knows these cars well, as simply over tightening the small oil filter can cause smoking problems too.

At least now the car will be like new!
