NEWBIE 993 Problems already
NEWBIE 993 Problems already
Picked up my 96 993 yesterday and made the 700 mile drive home. Love the car, but....
1. Rotten, moldy burn the nostril smell from heater?
It reminds me of the same old Saab smell I used to get. I know the car has sat alot for the last couple years...could be animal dead? Anyone had this problem and have suggestions on cleaning out the system without removing the heater box or exchangers? Or maybe prob is somewhere else.
2. Here is the big one. Very stiff clutch. Once in a while it will even stick on the way back out and then kind of "pop" out the rest of the way. Someone mentioned flushing the hydraulic fluid but wonder if there is a problem with the throw out bearing or related?
3. Rear spoiler does not retract...always. Did a search and will begin fix but if you have suggestions or links, thanks for those!
4. Cruise not working.. Microswitch at pedals? where to begin?
5. Throttle sticks at 3000 rpms. Also found fix's in search but any comments welcomed!
btw, I had a 996tt for a few months but just sold it for this 993. Above problems aside, I love the car so much more than the 996tt and look forward to sharing my ownership experiences here instead. Feels like a "real" Porsche. (no harm meant to 996-ers! just my feeling)

Did you not get a PPI first?
1. Replace the cabin filters, & you may have to purchase a AC system cleaner like this one
http://www.detailersdomain.com/1zein...iacleaner.aspx
It will clean out any bacteria in the system.
2. That is SO NOT NORMAL. It might be a binding return spring on the pedal, but the push down should be easy. I would bleed the clutch & hope that works, if not it may be the throw out bearing, that is $$.
3. It never retracts? Does it move with the switch? The activator is under the dash on the passenger side, you should be able to hear it click when it goes up, & same when it goes down. It's a grey box, near the bottom. Make sure it plugged in all the way.
4. I hope this is not related to the clutch & AC system. Remove the floor mats & the wood pedal cover, make sure there isn't water & rust in there. You may have to spray some lube in the pedal area & make sure there is nothing obstructing anything. On a 96+ the throttle cable is not easy to get at, it's behind the air cleaner. You need to find what end it is binding on. This is also not a normal problem.
I seriously hope you don't have some bad water leaks & the pedal box is all messed up, causing the issues you have & the smell.

Had the same issue w/my AC. a new filter & cleaner the car smells 10000 times better
Also had the same issue w/the pedal, thankfully mine was a spring issue
I found myself a good (and trustworthy) experienced mechanic who specialized in 993's, if you can find one he (or she) will be worth their weight in gold

Update. I sprayed some carb cleaner on the throttle linkage (for lack of proper name) in the engine compartment. The throttle, for now, does not stick and returns to normal idle all the time.
The smell seems better now too...maybe it just needs time and regular use to air out. I will change the filters though and make sure I am up to date on that.
When you say a new "cleaner" what do you mean? I know the cabin filter is in the trunk but what is the cleaner?
Finally you said you had a spring problem with the pedal...did you mean clutch or accel?
I would like to address any spring problem with the pedal...sounds easiest!
Thanks for all your responses...I will get this car sorted out!

There's 2, in the front trunk right under the windshield. They take about 10min to replace. Usually there around $40 for the pair.

Im going to bleed the slave clyinder when I get the chance and see if that free's up the clutch. It seems a bit better with more use or maybe Im getting used to it.
Cruise works...I tried this on someones recommendation and it DID work.
Manually pull the clutch pedal towards you. The cruise worked after that.
Updates to come and relieved my 993 is beginning to shape up.
