993 c2 vs c2s
What are the specific differences beside wider stance and split rear lid. I have found a 97 c2s which does not have the "carrera s" script on tach. Did they all have this. Vin is clearly an "s"

S has a nice wider rear. More power, bigger engine... S's are always more desirable bottom line. Just some 411: GT2's are narrow body non S cars with a flared fender add on and of course the Turbo and much more. So if you were going to alter the car later on, a C2 would do for a replica GT2.
I guess in a nut shell... if you can get an S...do it. If not the C2 is a great car also. After all they are all Porsche's.

Oddly enough, not all 993 Carrera S's had the "Carrera S" script on the tach. Mine is a 97 and has the "S" script on the tach but I've seen others that don't have it. And contrary to what the above poster said, the '97/98 993 Carrera and 993 Carrera S had the same engine - no difference.

The difference is in the wide body and wider track to match. There are no power or bigger engine's in the 993 version of the 911. With the newer 997's this is true but not in the 993's. As David says some have the script some didn't. Other then the wide body there is no real difference.

I guess my bad. I thought the 993 S's had the 3.8
That mistake admitted the aesthetic difference between the S wide body and the narrow non-S body is a big deal at least to me. The wide body is way more sexy.
Thanks to the others for setting me straight. I should know better. Back to the books.

C2S, same 272hp engine, same brakes as C2 (no big reds).
Interior has special door inserts, the special tach, & most have the aluminum shifter & e-brake.
The exterior has turbo twist 18in wheels, split rear grill color matched to the paint, & turbo front bumper. Of course it's a widebody. Most have the M030 sport suspension.
They are sexy, will always be worth more then a similar C2 or C4 narrowbody.

Stealthy,
What do you mean by special door inserts and a special tach?
As for putting my C4S Aero up for sale, parting is such sweet sorrow. Love the car, but it's one 993 too many for my garage.

I could not find a good pic of the door panels.
The C4S came with the same suspension as the C2S. Some of the early Porsche marketing implied that the C4S had the TT's suspension but that is inaccurate. This is not a big deal in any case since the suspension on all of these cars is wearing out due to age and mileage and should be replaced with better aftermarket alternatives anyway.
So to summarize the differences between the US market C2S and C4S:
C4S was sold 96-98, C2S 97-98.
1998 C4S MSRP was $73,000, C2S was $63,750.
C2S EPA Mileage: 17 City, 25 Hwy, C4S EPA Mileage: 16 City, 23 Hwy
Same body, but C2S has a slightly different looking (split and body colored) spoiler cover. The widebody shared by the TT, C4S and C2S is only 1.1" wider than the "narrowbody." Both S cars feature the TT's front bumper.
The C2S came with a few slightly different interior trim pieces, including a Carrera S logo on the tachometer, and metallic trim on the parking brake haddle and door sills. Some parts of the C2S dashboard and door panels have "textured leather" inserts, the C4S retains the standard finish vinyl.
C4S has the TT's AWD system. C2S had the standard Carrera drivetrain.
C4S came with ABD and a LSD, C2S did not.
C4S came with TT brakes (Big Reds), C2S had standard Carrera brakes.
C4S came with 18" "turbo-look" solid spoke wheels with P225/40ZR18 Front & P285/30ZR18 Rear Tires. C2S came with standard Carrera's 17" wheels with 205/50ZR17 Front & 255/40ZR17 Rear Tires. The C2S standard size wheels were mounted with spacers to help fill in the wider rear wheel wells.
The AWD system of the C4S and TT required that some braking components be moved around in the trunk area, although the overall trunk volume is effectively the same.
The TT/C4S gear linkage is slightly different than the Carrera/C2S due to the front driveshaft.
There are several published weights, but commonly the C4S is listed as 110 lbs. heavier than the C2S. It is unclear how the extra weight is distributed among the AWD system, larger brakes, larger wheels, LSD, and ABD.

Yes, both the C2S & C4S had the 18 turbo wheels, that are solid spoke. If you take your hand & put it behind the wheel you can feel two little groves back there they are solid. If it is smooth like the face they are hollow. Some cars came with the solid, & some with the hollow, my guess it was a option for the hollows.
