Oil Temp Gauge Erratic

The oil temp gauge on my '97 993 Cab behaves normally until operating temp is reached (second mark). The needle then sometimes jumps to pinned in the red. A tap on the gauge returns it to normal, so I'm thinking it's not the sensor.

Some pin in the multiplug on the back of the gauge is not making a good connection? I've cleaned the pins, but was afraid to spray into the pin holes.

Has anyone experienced this?

Thanks!

EDIT: This scenario seems to be exactly like Stealth 993's post from 2007. https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...oil-temps.html

If you tap on the glass does it return? You can try to clean the contacts on the sensor & the gauge. If that doesn't help, you got to send the gauge out for repair.
