Shifter came loose - How to fix?
Shifter came loose - How to fix?
1996 993 Question:
My stick shift came loose the other day. I can kinda get into most gears, but there's no leverage to get it over to reverse. If I pull directly up on the shifter, it moves four or more inches.
I had my mechanic come by and he removed the sock and trim work and sure enough, the thing just isn't attached anywhere. The rod that goes to the transmission is still connected, but that's the only thing!
What do I need to attach this shifter to the base? My mechanic said he thought it used a bushing or grommet. I haven't looked that closely. I searched the forums here for 'loose shifter' and a few other variations, but haven't found any useful threads.
thanks in advance,
mtf

As I've researched this more closely, it looks like I need a shifter guide tube bushing. Any confirmation on the part number would be appreciated. It seems like it's loose on the end of the shift guide tube closer to the transmission, not the end that's closest to the dash. I checked Pelican parts for a diagram, but they seem to only show what looks like a bushing for the end of the shifter tube closest to the dash.

Bad pic of my own shifter showing the open space leading back to the engine / transmission:

I would think along with the bushing you would also need the circlip. I suspect you need more then just those items from the sound of it, but without more pictures or looking at your shifter, it's impossible to say. For more information on the bushing and circlip Click Here.
Can you provide a part number? Which part is this?
Appreciatively,

The Shift Tube Guide in the link is just the rubber bushing.
