Carbon Fiber Peeling!!!
Carbon Fiber Peeling!!!
I bought my car new. Delivery was June 2002.
I purchased 40K in options, bringing the tax in price to $199K+.
In addition to buying the car new from the dealer, I have paid them $$$ dollars in shop fees for ALL of my modifications - 640 kit, 700 kit, 2 clutches etc.
5 years later my full cabon package is starting to peel.
The car is parked in a climate controlled environment 24/7/365 - unless being drive (hard!). The car has never been parked in blazing heat or freezing cold - ever. The CF seems to have been laid before it totally cured and has subsequently warped as it dried.
I've contacted the service manager of the local Porsche dealership here in Edmonton, Alberta where I purchased the car - GUY @ NORDEN AUTOHAUS 3 times. Guy told me he would look into it and see what he could do for me. That was 3 weeks ago. I've never received a return call.
Needless to say, I will never buy a new Porsche from them again or spend any money in their service department.
What should I do to get this carbon fiber fixed? The areas that are pealing are the pieces over the air vents, the strip along the windshield and the pieces on the doors. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Feel your frustration Z, we have the same issues here in UK with the main stealer, always quick enough to take your cash from you though!
Keep at em! You will eventually get an answer from them. Good Luck

My 02 also has the full carbon package and I have had the horseshoe and both side vents replaced under warranty on 05. Both vents are now seperating again. This car is also garaged all the time. For what Porsche charges for the CF they should do a better job.
The custom pieces I have had made by a thrid party have had NO issues at all

The carbon fiber in my car is also peeling around the air vents. I also have cracks in the clear coat on the CF steering wheel. Short of replacing everything, or going to the dealer, can anyone suggest a fix for this problem?
A car I test drove had the same issue. I would go to bumperplugs.com. I am very happy with there customer service and the product is great.

Unfortunately since CF is a laminate...there really is no good "fix". I went the aftermarket route...most all of it with John at MAcarbon...still looks new. I think it will have to be replaced...not sure if it is warranted for 5 years.
i had my CF vents replaced under warranty when the car was under "new car warranty".
most recently i had coverage for the horseshoe denied at different dealership since car is now within 'cpo' warranty.
both times the CF was seperating.I thought that the head/sun exposure would affect the CF this way but since you say your car is always in a climate control garage my opinon changed.
i would suggest macarbon. good quality stuff so far (had for a few months, looks great but too soon to determine shelf life)
oem looks great too when new but we all know how that works out..

Thanks for the great suggestions. There seems to be a real problem with the OEM CF. Shouldn't this be a recalled item and be elligable for replacement even after the warranty has expired? This was a $10,000 option for me. I don't feel like the $2000 / year ammortized cost to me makes any sense at all. How does a person go about dealing directly with Porsche North America on this issue?

Isnt there some way to re-laminate that CF with a glue compound? You'd think that a good interior shop would be able to put the lamination back in place....although if Porsche won't stand behind it, you'd have to pay for it yourself. I have heard repeated instances of the steering wheel cracking, but not the surrounds coming apart.
Are the instances of faulty lamination limited to a particular year car? Mine is also factory CF and it's an 02 and I havent' had any issues....you have me wondering now because I live in the Sacramento area and it gets reall HOT here. Heat and lamination are a bad combination.

Zippy,
Mine has held up very well, overall. I did have the vents replaced under warranty for slight curving, but it was not really too bad. I had it done about 2 1/2 years ago because it was covered under warranty. The replacements are still perfect and the rest of the car is holding up great - the CF still looks new - no cracking, dulling, clouding, color change, etc. and I drive the car every day and leave it in the sun...so there is hope for better quality on the replacement pieces, I think.

what do you expect? the cf on porsches interiors is just a veneer. they all eventually will peel. one of the main reasons I optioned not to order the cf interior. even if you had replaced all the pieces it would eventually peel again.
