Steve -- Don't risk it. You could have 24 miles left, or 2 miles, or 55 miles. At a low level, the fuel remaining is not directly measured, but is instead computer extrapolated, and can be very inaccurate.
I've never gotten it down to 24 miles. The lowest I got it to was 35 miles, and it only held 14 gallons when I filled it up. That means there were at least 2.6 gallons left in the tank which would have gotten me around 40 or so miles. The needle is very pessimistic though. It will say I only have 1/8 of a tank, but if I get gas it will only hold 10.5 or 11 gallons, which means I really had about a 1/3 of a tank.
Mine ran out of fuel the other day showing 59 miles remaining. the low fuel light wasn't on. I plan from now on to fill up when it is showing a quarter tank remaining. I think something is wrong with my system BC it is my understanding that the low fuel light is triggered by something independent of the fuel guage position.

According to the manual....when the remaining fuel leaves you less than 9 miles before running out, the gauge quits computing the remaining mileage and the screen blanks out.
You can actually increase the amount of miles left before you run out by driving the car conservatively at around 60mph and setting the cruise control. I've experimented around with the onboard computer and have seen the remaining mileage actually INCREASE when running conservatively because it's computing the mileage based upon the current speed and gas consumption on-the-fly. Drive more conservatively, and the gas mileage increases....drive aggressively, and it goes down.

If you're willing to risk sucking up whatever might have settled to the bottom of the tank go for it.
when in this situation, the car has still only held 13-14 gallons at the most. and that was filling it til it overflowed. i really don;'t believe the myth of the 16.9 gallon tank.

I always go for it. I have driven with the light on for miles and miles, sometime I think even the factory estimates are conservative. I ran out of gas once, in a M5 with a faulty fuel pump. You will definitely make it unless your guage is screwed.
My wife and I were driving through west texas in my Denali and I told here to get gas, but I also always take it to the minumum myself, well she didnt listen and said the meter says 51 miles left well 15 minutes later it said 0 and we were on the longest stretch of no gass stations which was at least 30 miles, I havent the slightest clue why the truck kept going but we made it. That was the longest drive ever, you couldnt see anything for miles.
