Question 5 sets too much?!?

I just recently put on my 19" HRE's on my car and I want to protect my investment... Sacramento/Elk Grove can be pretty "ghetto" in certain area/at certain times and I don't want my rims to get stolen and at the cost of damaging my car in the process. One of my buddies recommended getting 5 sets of wheel locks to make it more difficult for theft to happen and would buy more time to catch them if they were dumb enough to even try to steal. Any insight? If this is a good idea, where would one get some black wheel locks? I need them ASAP (doing a photoshoot this week) so buying them via internet might not be the best solution for me.

Any stores/tuners that carry them in the Sacramento area (NOR*CAL) or Orange County (socal) that I can pick up before the photoshoot that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Thanks again for all your help!

God bless,

Bryant

If neighborhood is that bad the TT shouldnt be there.

I would be more careful the car can be replaced but you are another story.

If they cant get your wheels off they will still mess up the car.

You may be better off with a good car alarm and motion detector to protect the car if you must drive in bad areas.

5 different sets of wheel locks should be pretty good even tho if they want the wheels they will grab them no matter what,,,,,you should look around see who might be able to install a tilt/motion sensor on your TT.... DEI I believe is the one that carries it and can be spliced into OEM wiring to trigger the factory alarm.....you need to check this out at a HIGH end audio/car shop

P.S. Its possible.....friend of mine with a Gs450 just got one installed thru a friend of his after getting his HRE stolen out from his house

Most wheel locks are a joke.

Here are the best I've ever seen:
http://www.mcgardlocks.co.uk/prodtyp...cordPosition=1

The outside will spin without the key- they cannot be removed without the key AFAIK. I was never able to find these in the USA.

I never park my car where people can access it for more than 10 minutes...unlike Elk Grove, Latrobe isn't too 'ghetto'!

Why the rush for a photoshoot? Is the photographer a thief???

A

PS Wheel locks are removed easily and quickly with a set of SAE and metric sockets: simply find a socket that barely fits over the lock, then slam it on with a metal hammer- it locks on the outside and you just click the socket wrench onto the socket and remove! How do you think tire shops get the locks off when owners don't have the key???

Bryant: Elk Grove is hardly ghetto. It's basically a bedroom community and the ghetto part comes from South Sacramento which is about five miles to the north. You garage your car right? If so, that eliminates at least 10 hours a day when it's home. Where do you drive and hang out that requires the five lock approach? To me, that's where your car could become a target of opportunity.

I live about 4 miles from you....and for a month had to park the car outside while they redid the garage....I just covered it at night a set the alarm. Your car is Speed Yellow so it is a bit more of an attractor than my midnight blue....but I think you're going for a bit of an overkill. The motion alarm suggestion is good....and have it set up to hit your pager and alert you. You can make ownership of these nice cars a journey through paranoia with too much concern.

If they want the rims they'll take the car. Just make sure you are covered with insurance and don't worry about it too much, it's just a car at the end of the day.

Even the rotating ones are a joke. Squirt some 5-minute epoxy
in them and either drive around the block or come back tomorrow
and they'll turn just like the solid ones as soon as you hammer a
tight socket on them.

I might venture the opinion that that isn't typically in the 'kit' that thieves carry around.... but I generally don't know what they carry

Actually how DO you "squirt" 5 minute epoxy anyway? I've never seen epoxys that are premixed in a syringe- so they'd need to squirt it out of the 'twin tube' you get at home depot, mix it, then load it into another syringe... then try to get enough past the rim of the wheel lock, which on the mcgards is less than a mm.

Black Bolts/locks Here

Check it out. Once installed there's no way to tell which are locks and which are bolts. Will frustrate a would-be thief for sure (and you as well if you forget in what position on the wheel you put the locks, haha)

Yep. Squirt both into a third. A good option is the non-needle
irrigation syringe you can get from Longs, like dentists give
you to wash out the holes from pulled teeth. squirt it in, and
a bit of tape to hold it in till it sets. I've used this technique for
freezing parts I needed to yank or torque out together. If the
gap is like the McGard lug, that's plenty of space to fill. You could
even just smear enough in with some epoxy on a Popsicle stick.
