Good luck!

Street driving and slipper clutches don't work well. The Tilton is the closest thing because the carbon can take the abuse of street driving and can be slipped at the drag strip as well (The hotter it gets the better it grips).

We run slipper clutches in our chasis Drag cars, they're a completely different animal to setup and get to work properly, and require quite a bit of maintenance.

How is the clutch working? Is there the chatter present like the other LW clutches and FW's?

There is definitely chatter, definitely noise. It's not as bad as other cars I've heard with the engine/ clutch being in the back compared to front, but if you want a quiet car this isn't going to work for you. I bumped the radio up 1-2 clicks and don't notice it anymore.

Not to harp on the subject again... I hope it works... but for drag racing you need a dry metal clutch... hence, eddie bellow and evoms... both whom seem to have a decent amount of drag racing use a non carbon clutch... and both use company... I have been pulling my teeth out trying to get my ATS cabon to hold 100% so I can run a mid 9 sec pass... so close yet so far away...
I have been advised to put a dry clutch and call it a day.

I guess we need to study drag racing a bit more then. We won the NHRA Street Tire championship in 03 using this exact same clutch to go 9.0's on Drag radials in our Supra, ever since there have been another 10-20 sub 9 second cars and 2-3 sub 8 second cars (Supras/ Vipers/ Evos) using this exact clutch pack and release bearing, all we changed was the flywheel and the hydraulics.

I'm sure it will work, and sure it will hold whatever power you want to put through it, and if it doesn't hold the power, Tilton also offers a quad disk version of the clutch pack but I don't any 996's will be in need of that for some time. I don't intend on going out there and setting records, but I do want a car that will 60 foot every time with no worries. I think in your situation you should be trying to see the light on this one, rather than seeing the dark. From what I've read you've changed tuners and setups more times than anyone else on this forum, so I can understand why you would be quick to jump against this, I'm just confident that it will work, if it doesn't, you can bet that Tilton will engineer something that will.

I do a lot of 0 - 100MPH runs so I need something that will hold up to the 510HP I have now and the 700HP later mods.

I changed tuners because it took me that long to find him ... looks like you got lucky...
No I do not look at the dark side... I just do not believe everything they all say... and that is from my experience with all the tuners that I worked with... Im actually doing it... pushing my car to the edge..... For you application it will be overkill... but thats Ok... at least it will work.
For my application it may take a special version...
Don't get me wrong... Im not against anyone here... I just know too much for my own good... and that gets me in trouble sometimes...
good luck and wish you the best,
Mark

I wouldn't call it luck, more like education. I went with the right tuner from the start because I researched it quite a bit before swiping my plastic. Just as I went the right clutch from the start as well, so I had Tilton make me one. The clutch is overkill for my current application, but it will hold up just fine as I increase the power levels that I plan on. A 1.3-1.40 60' is abusive on the clutch regardless of the power.

Too much gets put into the badge on the front of the car, great parts are great parts, it's just a matter of making them work in your application.

Don/'t get me wrong mine is 99% fine... its the 1% that Im looking for and I may not be able to get it... but then Im at 800+ rwhp and that starts to make a huge difference...

Markski,

Come to TX2K8 and see what works and what doesnt.

There will be no shortage of Horsepower there (In ANY make of automobile)!

Perfect testing scenario: 1/4 mile, 60-130, etc, etc.

I am curious who has given you this advice.. The clutch packs are almost identical on the tilton for the porsche as the Evo if not exactly the same.. it just has a different flywheel.. ATS has nothing on Tilton and when you do finally get the tilton i am sure youll see what i am talking about.. I know Nero mentioned darins supra runs 170mph.. The same clutch is also in an evo running 8's @ 172mph with 1.4 60's AWD.. I was on the phone with John Shepherd last week ( 7.70@190 + Talon ) and i beleive hes said he runs the same tilton.. So the 145mph trap speed you run will be cake for a tilton. To be honest your the 1st person i have ever seen so hard up against tilton and i dont know why.. Maybe lack of racing experience.. Tilton has been around for years and is the ONLY clutch I would ever use in any drag car that i wanted to run a good time in.

The clutch pack (as mike stated, same used in Evos, Supras, Vipers) is rated to 1200hp/tq. Beyond that you need the quad disk and I believe I've only ever seen 2 cars that needed that, both had 91mm turbos with 250shot on top of that. My last Supra had 1,100hp without the spray and never slipped once. Darin hasn't had his on the dyno recently, but with a 170mph trap it's in the 1300-1400hp range. The last track session he drove the car to the track, made 5 8.6X passes and then drove the car home. End result, you're going to need to find more horsepower if you want to use that as the excuse not to purchase this clutch.

A nice benefit to this clutch that may or may not have been mentioned as well is the weight savings. If someone is purchasing it for straight line use only or wanted to convert to RWD for other reasons, they could easily see a 150-175lb weight drop, just by installing this clutch and removing the actuator setup, as well as the front differential and corresponding parts. I've seen people spend 5-6k on wheels to save 15lbs, this clutch saves over 30 in direct rotational mass alone.

Plan is still on to bring this car to TX, I'm not sure if we'll have the fuel system / intercoolers done by then but regardless the car will be making in the mid 500 range and have this clutch installed.
