2nd Air Snorkel

So here's a new project (I'm a bit bored, the weather here blows):

I got the snorkel from Porsche last week, and took some cursory measurements tonight. Not completely sure that it will fit on the left side of the engine bay as the intercooler hose seems to be at least partially in the way. Figure I'll start cutting it up this week and see if it fits. Worst case I'll have to patch up a hole - no biggie.

Has anyone tried to do this yet with any success? I thought someone fabbed one up for use on the Vivid box, but not sure how it would have fit. Curious to hear anyones experiences?

Happy Holidays all!

I have been thinking about doing a mod like this but short of designing a new mold so that it looks and functions like stock. how well does it match up and seal to the stock box? please post a pic of your mod'd air box.

IMHO, someone that comes up with a simple left side snorkel that mates up well to the stock box may have the best air box.

No idea yet. The snorkel is from the 997TT. Looks a little thick, but I won't know about the fit for sure until I actually start hacking. The Sportec one looks thin, so that may be the secret. The EVOM IC hoses are pretty big, so there's not much room on that side. I'll post plenty of pics aong the way, but it should look stock once I'm done... I hope.

is it possible to grind down the sides to make it thinner or will the snorkel start to hit the deck lid? keep us posted.

Well after talking with Kevin at UMW, I decided on going a similar route, but may end up just buying his work of art/carbon box. I bought, then quickly sold the AP CAI. I'm pretty sure the K&N filter in that AP unit isn't sufficient to flow the required amount of air.

Keep us posted...

Anybody know how much that beautiful carbon airbox costs? Is it the same as the sportec box?

The snorkel from the 997TT won't fit,the intercooler hose is much to high,I had to rebuild the snorkel to let it fit...

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to cut it in half lenth-wise to get it to fit right.

Well all I'm saying is I took a loss to sell mine and it was a week old. I just felt I wanted something with a little more surface area. On a stock 996TT, I'm sure it isn't restricting you, but on a modified 996TT, that box isn't going to gain you anything. Think about it like this:

The stock box has more filteration area, and a larger "can" to stage the air charge. It still necks down to the same size boot at the intake.

On the Agency Power CAI you have less filteration *(that filter seriously bothers me) and it has less volume storage of the air charge than the stock box. It still necks down to the same inlet size, so in my opinion, it doesn't seem logical that it will make more power once the filter has any mileage on it. As a matter of fact, I'd bet money it eventually causes a loss in power.

Ok, got started on this tonight.

Step 1: Cut in half

Here's the rough fit on the fan shroud:

Next I'm going to cut a hole in the shroud and figure out a way to fasten the new duct to it. JB Weld or epoxy? Decisions decisions...
