Advice for modified air intake

Hello!

I have an '01 996 TT. I will be installing a Milltek exhaust this weekend. I still have the stock intake. I'd appreciate recommendations on modifications to the stock air intake.

Thanks!

Jon

Do you have any other performance mods currently (other than the exhaust) or any other mods planned for the future?

I have an Upsolute ECU flash. I do not plan to go over 1 bar of boost. The diverter valves were upgraded by the PO, but I am not sure exactly to what.

I looked at the Agency Power kit -- looks like a real easy install.

With stock power, try a K&N filter with the stock box. If you want to though, you can cut the top off the stock box to get more airflow. I bought a box already cut because in the early days of the Turbo (before EVO, Sportec, Vivid, Fabspeed aftermarket stuff came out) this was a popular mod. With a K&N, I'd say you get 8-10 hp without spending much $$.

At your power level, anything more than a replacement panel filter really isn't needed. Just because you can bolt it on doesn't mean that it is right for the combination. I've made 600 to the wheels with a K&N in the stock airbox without issue.

Thanks a lot for all of the thoughtful replies. I think that I will follow the consensus and go for the K&N panel filter. Save the rest for tires

Yup, I would stick with a BMC or K&N filter for your power level.

Regarding the oiled panel filters. I have a BMC and was wondering. Are any of you guys just washing these to remove oil and then not lightly reoiling when you reinstall. In other words are ya'll running them dry or very lightly oiled. It was pretty oily right out of the package. However I have not had any issues and over 12000 miles at stage 2 with this filter. It has been cleaned and reoiled once. What is suggested?

I have been driving 10000 miles with oiled K&N filter, never had a MAF issue, they even tested it at K&N and they said the oil wasn't the reason for bad MAF.

I haven't seen a problem with K&N filters with the exception of those who maintenance them and over-oil them prior to reinstallation. I've seen numerous MAF failures on 996's that were running dry elements, so I think there's a bit of a misconception out there. The filter should only be very lightly oiled.
