Paint Advice

I have a 2002 996 TT that it's clear coat seems to have thinned out. My detail guy advised me that the car needs a new fresh coat of paint and 4 coats of clearcoat.

The car has a really good body with no dents or imperfections, since it's black, the scratches and spiderwebs are very noticeable under the sun and it really gets to me.

My detail guy tells me that no amount of wax or paint polish can make the car look better than it is and that color sanding is not an option because because the clear coat is very thin.

What would you do? Any advice will be well appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I would have him do a test spot with a polish and see if the results are what you are looking for. Without pictures I really can't judge how bad the paint is, but that would be my approach. Good luck!!!

How does your detailer know that the clear coat is "too thin?" What have you done in the past to the finish? Has it been wet sanded before? Do you use a DA cutting pad on it every detail? I have a hard time believing that the clear coat is too thin...especially if the car hasn't been over polished or abused.

I'd post this message on the detailing section and let Moe or Phil take a look with some photos. A repaint job is no simple matter...it costs $$$$$ for a decent job...and it will definately turn buyers away if and when you decide to sell it.

You cant just look at the paint and say "hmm, clear is too thin". The only way you would know is if you lightly scratched and got down to the base, or if you were to try color sanding. Go to different detailer and have them try to buff it out. Just using a polish wont help, theyre going to need to use a medium or heavy cut buffing compound.

I was wondering the same thing does he have a paint gauge that he took measurements of the paint on each detail and has he logged in what the paint measurement was after each detail?

Just saw this thread. It seems you're in the right path. Let me know which shop you've taken it to and what the prognosis is. I'd be happy to take a look; I'm in LA a few times a week.

He sounds like a novice, as Porsche paint is very very good. Better to check some references of his work, and get a second opinion.

I would get a second opinion....not that Porsche paint is special, just that a good detailer can do magic...check out autopia.org and ask for a detailer in the area...or MoeMistry...
