Question about a Turbo on autotrader
Ok, now i know that when something seems too good to be true, it most likely is. And other cars with astonishingly low prices in the past turned out to be bogus deals as well after doing a little research on them. I'm not in the market for a new car, but i thought i would post about this just to see what people think. I'm curious to see if others are as skeptical as me...

now i never did a carfax on any of the cars i've researched in the past, but this time i ran one and this car came up clean. 2 owners, clear title (no accidents, floods, fires, etc.), not a manufacturer buyback (lemon). now these reports seem to hold a substantial amount of credibility for used car buyers, but does this report mean anything in this situation? I can't help but think that something is wrong with this car. Opinions?

Hi,
There have been a few times when I have seen these kinda deals.
The crook usually takes the pic of the car, including VIN number, when the car is parked somewhere, then posts it.
Most likley he or she will tell you that he is overseas, and will ship the car to you!!

actually the car is in Cali, and the phone number listed checks out as a CA area code.

well it seems so far that most of you are as skeptical as i am. but at the same time it seems that nobody here would just walk away from a deal that looks too good to be true until you knew for a fact that is was a scam. so i'll call the number and see what the owner has to say about this car...i'll post the verdict a.s.a.p.
*EDIT* - just made the call and got no answer. i let it ring over 10 times and got no answering machine. so i will email the owner via autotrader and hopefully i'll get a response sometime today/tonight.

beware of these ****in crooks. they are all over ebay and making tons of money, especially on the plasma tv site of ebay, i mean a dime a dozen. i have dealt with a few of them on several occasions, while looking for a plasma for the bathroom. i called a 996TT guy out on this pretending i was naive and a dumb rich guy just to try to figure out the scam. they all and i mean all claim that they are out of the country on business or moved, this TT guy your talking to is gonna claim he moved back to france and was gonna ship his car back over to france but because of the different governing on cars it would be too much of a hastle and money. he will either ask you to send a retainer of $3500 through western union or e-escrow to him in europe. and will have the car shipped to you to inspect and at that time you pay in full, but ofcorse there is no car that will be shipped. the carfax actually panns out correctly. btw the 28k turbo i was looking at was on yahoo's cars.com 2 months ago, same guy i'm sure, i sent him a letter saying that if he finds anyone dumb enough to send him the money he deserves it. no reply.

indeed it is a scam...i never got through to the phone number listed, but i did get a reply email, claiming that the car is in Hyde Park, England
.
if these guys really do snap a photo of a car in a driveway and put it up on autotrader, how do they get a valid VIN number? don't you have to look inside the car? or is it etched underneath too?
