Car not taking gas??
Hey guys, I have recently had the problem of my car not taking gas in. It acts as if it is full when I am pumping at the station. I can get a gallon or two in fine but then it shuts off. I can get gas in VERY slowly (took me 30 minutes to fill the tank). From what I have read in the pasts post there are a few things it may be. I checked and replaced the E6 fuse and also replaced the valve at the filler neck. I am now stumped.
Is there any other valves in the tank that may have failed? Could there be an obstruction in the filler neck? Maybe a wiring problem to one of the valves? Is there a way to diagnose what it might be? I really dont want to take a trip to the dealer!
Any help would be much appreciated!

Fill her up.... NOT!!!!!!!
I had a similar problem. Brought the car to the dealership.
They had to reinstall the ORVR REED SWITCH in lock. They also had to partially remove the filler neck.
Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery(ORVR) is a vehicle emission control system that captures fuel
vapors from the vehicle gas tank during refueling.
BTW, I still have problems filling my tank at certain gas stations but I found one that never gives me trouble. It's very strange.
Found this info.
What if I have trouble refueling my car?
As the 1998 model year cars that have ORVR enter the marketplace, there is a slight possibility
that some car owners may experience difficulty refueling their vehicles. Some 1998 ORVR
vehicles (not all ORVR vehicles) may experience premature shut off problems at a very small
percentage of gas stations (1-2 percent of stations across the country). These nozzles at those
stations are being fixed or replaced by the nozzle manufacturers and service stations. New
vehicle owners who experience a problem should review and follow fueling instructions posted
near the dispenser. If the fueling problem continues, the customer should tell the service station
attendant about the problem. If the problem occurs at several stations (with different types of
nozzles), EPA recommends contacting your automobile service department.
They told me that Reed switch for the orvr was found pulled out of lock by an outside influence. (LOL ) outside influence ( LOL )
That did the trick.
$310.00 out the door.
Hope this helps you in your search.

Try pushing the flap back and see if it clicks.. if it doesnt click the check fuses again.. if it does click then you have a clot somewhere and not allowing the fumes to be evacuated into your motor.

take a screw driver or something long.,... I think ur supposed to hear a click which means that the switch opens or closes the fueling passage....

I started doing the gas handle upside down (rotated 180 degrees from what you would think is normal for filling).....no more spills. Read this on this forum. No reason known to me, but it worked. So, I just do it.
Once I had a fuse go out and that did not allow me to fill up the car....do a search on renntech/here/rennlist. Same as a standard 996. I think it was a 5A. Happened after I had a new radio put into the car. Just fyi.

Need a long straight piece to open the lower flap (you cannot see it, it is down
12" or so). I used a aluminum driveway marker (complete with reflector on top).
This is just so you can get it fixed. I went bonkers when I couldnt get gas in mine
at (3) different stations.

The canister is part of the OBVR. Basically, as you fill the gas tank the air in the tank is full of fuel vapor that needs to go somewhere. Since the gas is coming in one side of the tank, the tank has a vent on the other side. A tube goes from this vent to the charcoal canister. As the air is pushed through the charcoal, the fuel vapor is absorbed, thus cleaning the air and apparently making the world a better place.
If this system were to get clogged somehow, then as you fill the tank, pressure would build and shut the pump off. You should be able to test this. Just go to fill 'er up. When it shuts off early, pull out the nozzle, re-insert it, and fuel some more. You should get more gas in this way that if you just re-squeeze the handle without pulling it out (does that make sense?)
I'd ask some hard questions about replacing the canister. These things last quite a while. However, I don't have much Porsche specific knowledge in this area.
HTH,

I used this technique on my '72 911 for many years. It just fueled faster...
