I have always wondered how high of a boost a stock system is capable of generating if there were no restraints put on it. Does anyone know?

I know it's stock because I own it .. It is a plain ol' 996TT.

The thing I failed to mention is that this was taken at 4800ft coming across eastern Colorado last week. I've noticed in the past that the car indicates more boost at altitude, but never bothered to take a picture.

On the whole altitude sucks -- turbo lag is more pronounced -- somewhat similar to the old 993 turbos at sea level in how/where the power is produced.

Oh... so you bought it new or? If you bought it new and it's not been chipped then perhaps the altitude indeed might explain it but even so was it "holding" or just "peaking" at 1bar? Either way.. impressive

what about the diagnosis of my car ... will it go higher after the car has been broken in? i noticed the pic of the 1 bar car was at 20k miles

No -- I only see .6-.8 at sea-level.

What you see is either the guage incorrectly calculating the boost -- or the car making more boost to make up for lack of oxygen at altitude. I once read somewhere that the turbos are capable of making the rated horsepower up to 8800 feet -- which would of course require more boost to make up for less air ..

so in theory if I alter the output of my pressure sensor I can up the boost to 1 bar. sweet...

Somebody please enlighten me! I really don't see what the big deal is about getting higher boost. Isn't the boost level deliberately regulated by the engine computer so that the engine is not damaged? So, if a car is getting higher than normal boost(while everything is stock), then either something is not working right, or the surrounding conditions is such that the engine computer is compensating for it.

Example:

At see level: atmospheric pressure of 1 bar + 0.8 bar(on the gage) = 1.8 bar total to the engine.

Higher altitude: say atmos. pressure 0.8 bar + 1 bar(on the gage) = 1.8 bar total to the engine.

The computer must have a sensor that compares the manifold pressure to an absolute vacuum.

Off-topic but worth a mention:

Right after this happened I was followed by two state troopers -- luckily they never hit me with their radars (oh how I love my V1).

Anyhow I noticed they were setting up a great trap.

Trooper number 1 uses his instant on mode to tag oncomming traffic. Trooper number 2 drops back about a 1/4-1/2 mile and waits for all the suckers who see trooper number 1 and once past him speed back up.

I guess they must have discussed this at some recent piggy convention because I noticed the same thing happening a couple of times in Kansas as well.

Lesson of the day? When on the Interstate and you see one oncoming copper -- don't speed up for a while in case their is a second.

I had my V1 save me in a similar situation. One Cop (Highway Patrol) was parked just short of a bridge, running his radar full time. Across the bridge the second Cop was tagging drivers with instant-on. With a regular radar detector, drivers would think they had cleared the radar trap since the second radar would be hiding in the full time radar's transmission. The V1 showed both radars via the arrows, and I had a "2" in the counter.
