Gemballa Third Intercooler Mod

Since I am running out of mods, I recently decided to go with this one. I guess you could group it into the “performance mod” category however it will only prove itself on occasion. It is the Gemballa THIRD intercooler.

This product takes the output from the factory intercoolers, cools it further and dumps the air charge into the throttle body. It only works with the Gemballa rear wing. The wing is designed in such a manner that air flowing down the rear window enters the engine bay through the intake grill on the engine bay cover, flows through the intercooler and exhausts out the rear grill.

The kit is beautifully designed and implemented with all necessary components and directions in true Gemballa style. I have found their products to fit nearly flawlessly with the single exception of the CF hoods. In that case, it is a 50/50 shot.

Here are some pictures………….

As you can see, Uwe really goes the extra mile to provide a well engineered product.

I think the only thing I may do to improve the installation is to add a plenum beneath the IC that is ducted to the rear exhaust grill, similar to the one behind the center radiator in the front…..hmmmmmmm….maybe I can use my pre-GT2 nose plenum……

With the negative pressure behind the car, evidenced by the attraction of dirt and debris in that area, I may get a little more flow through the IC.

From a performance perspective, it adds 0 horsepower. However, its purpose is really to preserve horsepower in continual hot-running conditions such as our recent Tail of the Dragon Run and any given Track Day. I found my boost pressure to remain consistent all day long while hammering the Dragon’s Tail in the hot weather.

One of these days, I need to sense the pre and post IC air temps. Another project for another day……………..

Adding an intercooler is a good investment. Peak hp is one thing.

Ken,

Glad you made it home safely and your car in 1 piece! Hydroplaning sucks!

For a second, I thought this was yet another intercooler....aside from what I saw at the group pic site...but it's the same. I was going to ask if you picked it up on your way back home last night! LOL!

Ken,

Setup looks HOT! Way to go.

I'd suggest you look into having them weld an HKS Al flange onto the elbow post-IC (pre-TB). Looks like there'd be enough room for the either the SSBOV or Type II... or really anything you want... Tial, etc.

You can direct it to face the rear, and it'd be a super clean install. In fact, why don't you run TWO SSBOV... one on each side of the bend venting to atm facing rear-ward!!!

Stephen,
I am really not up on the BOV vs DV swap. Are you saying the excess boost is vented to atmosphere rather than being recirculated? Can you elaborate? I know some guys are going this route.

Had a brain fart, and for a moment, got your fast black turbo confused with Alex's fast black turbo... and I knew that he had a HKS BOV setups that was venting to atm.

At any rate, while I'm still awaiting further feedback on venting to atm (neg experience with S4 venting to atm), seems like thus far, Alex, Fred, SP Engineering, Akkurat, and a few others have noticed none of the common side effects of momentary enrichened conditions or stumbling that comes w/ venting to atm without reprogramming the ecu.

My point is, IF you were to ever consider going the VTA (vent to atm) route w/ the HKS setup, you've got a PERFECT location already. Either mount one or two flanges (opposite) on the elbow leading to the TB, and point the BOVs straight back. That would look and sound so hot. Not to mention, so long as there's none of the aforementioned side effects, you'd have an ideal BOV (vta) setup.

I have no doubt that this will increase the efficiency of the engine, but I am wondering if the pressure loss negates the benefit the extra cooler might add.

Have you had a chance to measure the pressure loss? I am curious to see how your boost curve was affected.

vrus,
I haven't detected any loss. My boost gage still registers a constant 1.2 under full load with a 1.3 blip near redline. I haven't noticed any additional lag either.
I don't know if it is my imagination or what, but, it seems on hot days in the past, my power has seemed to degrade slightly over the course of the day under certain conditions (presumably due to heat soak). Judging by my car's performance at TOD in the hot south, I am pleased.

I would think you might have heat soak issues with the IC in that location. Is there a way you can measure the air temp. coming out of the stock IC's and then coming out of the Gemballa IC. I would wonder about pressure loss as well. Nevermind I just saw on your post that your planning to do that. It is a beautiful installation and your car is amazing.

Cole,
I don't have any videos hosted at this time. I will be looking into it in the future since I have now collected a good deal of video. My favorite is the one of me doing donuts in the Hershey, PA parking lot!! Porsche Babe, remember that ride??

Bruce,
I will be looking into monitoring several engine parameters besides the charge air temp.

David,
I am trying. I intend to load my video editing software and at least get the donut video up. Stay tuned....I am a novice at the video editing thing.

I know what you mean by novice. Video editing is about the only thing left for me to learn on computers.
