You couldn't make the seal with a $10 piece of gasket material?

Best $7,000 I ever spent. I forgot what these transmissions are like when new. I can again tap my toe and it downshifts once, stomp it and it double downshifts. Tap it from a dead stop and it goes to first gear instead of starting in second.

Ah, sounds like you had issues other than just the leak as reported in this thread...

Strange and uncommunicative responses, this one...

First you had the 'same issue' and replaced the tranny. The issue reported in this thread is an oil leak.

When I pointed this out you replied the new tranny was so much better (shifts) than the old one...best $7k you ever spent.

So I said Oh, apparently there WERE other issues.

Then you said 'no, just 90k miles'.

So one then might assume either (a) you were lying or mistaken about the new one shifting so much better than the old one, and/or (b) you just wanted to replace the tanny at 90k for preventative maintenance. Whatever.

I'd like to add to this topic, since my 2003 996TT has just been diagnosed with the dreaded Tiptronic case gasket leak. My indie will inspect it more closely to determine precisely where the leak is coming from. I am hesitant to replace the entire transmission at significant cost as it has been performing flawlessly. I know there are a few other members on here who have had this leak. I conjecture that this leak is related to an earlier failed transmission mount where lateral stress places additional force against the case and gasket. Nobody has connected these two seemingly independent events yet, but reading the forums, it seems that a couple of members that had the failed case gasket mentioned a broken transmission mount. If that is the case, as our cars start to age, there will be more cars requiring a repair of this seal. I'd like to add to this knowledge base by detailing the exact parts and discussing the best methods of solving this problem.

As everyone knows, the seal to the case is not available from Porsche or Mercedes. The two most economical solutions mentioned by other posters have been to use a sealing compound in lieu of the old gasket or to make the seal by using the factory seal as a template. The tolerance gap between the case and the bell housing does seem to matter, so I believe that using the sealing compound method is not the best solution. I'm attaching a PDF from Victor Reinz, the OEM supplier to Porsche for gasket and sealing compounds:

https://dl.dropbox.c...(E)_Seite_9.pdf

Could someone with more technical knowledge than me look at the table on Page 13 and determine which model gasket is appropriate?
1) AFM 22 ; AFM 37/8; Reinzoloid FS53 or RGC 257 ?
2) What thickness should the gasket be (page 12) ?

Thanks in advance.

I agree with your assessment that there may be a connection between a failed trans. mount and subsequent leaking with the tiptronic transmission. This is what I believe happened to my tiptronic. I also felt/heard some grinding sounds whenever I made aggressive turns. I replaced the trans mount and the griding stopped, but the leaking didn't. I was going to eventually rebuild and strengthen my tip because I was planning to upgrade my turbos with the 18g wheel, this leak just made me do it sooner. I have a post on my tiptronic rebuild and the shop that did the work (FixEuro.com out of Dallas) made a very detailed repair blog with lots of pictures and video if you are interested.

Anyway, with regards to the gasket issue. I found a company out of New Jersey that sold the 722.6 tiptronic transfer case and tail housing gaskets for $99.00. The company is IPT Performance Trans and you can find the part on their website at IPTTRANS.com. Of course you have to spend the money for the labor costs, but if the gaskets are your only problem, then this is a much cheaper solution than replacing the entire tiptronic.

Good luck.

Interesting...I'm the guy that spent $3,500 on a rebuilt Tiptronic S (plus a couple grand to install it) for my 2002 996 Cab.
I did have a broken tranny mount prior to the leak. When I had the rebuilt tranny installed I saw there is a new Porsche part: Transmission Carrier Mount Code: 99737503303 .

No one could tell me when this new part came to be, but it is different from the part installed a few years ago.

If there's an interest, I have a couple stories related to buying a rebuilt tranny.
