Alignment of Speedtech exhaust

I just purchased a Speedtech exhaust and overall I'm very happy with it. It is not as loud as I had hoped but I guess thats a good thing since now I can take extended trips and my wife won't kill me. However, one problem I'm having is the alignment of the tips. The drivers side sits about 3/4" - 1" lower than the passenger side. I can't see how you can adjust the exhaust at all because once you bolt it to the turbo its pretty solid. I heard some of the exhuasts had the bolt holes slotted to allow for adjustment, is that true? (mine didn't). Appreciate advice from anyone who has installed this setup. Thanks

cfi_luz,

I have installed a number of these exhausts and have never seen one be off by so much. It could be any number of reasons such as the headers have been hit/bent causing a difference from one side to the other or the exhaust could have been damaged in shipment. Without being there it is tough to troubeshoot, but that is definetely not normal. The outlet pipes are usually dead on. It is possible to increase the adjustment range of the exhaust to a greater degree by drilling the four mounting holes on each flange to a larger size, which will give the exhaust additional "play". You would then adjust it (with the turbo bolts still loose, but almost tight), so as to align the tips at equall height and tighten the rear straps with the exhaust in the desired position. Then final tighten the bolts at the turbos. The mounting holes are not "slotted", but rather a little enlarged to provide some play for fine tuning the fit.

Thanks for the reply John. I know what you mean, it could be a myriad of reasons and I hope no one took this to be a reflection of a poor product. One thing I did notice is that I could not get the mufflers to sit straight, the drivers side sits higher, even though the tip is lower which leads me to believe the whole thing just needs to be rotated (thus lowering the muffler and raising the tip). Does that make any sense? I may try to enlarge the holes slightly. One question, do the straps affect the position much? I'm wondering if I can loosen that to adjust the muffler, but it doesn't seem like it should move much once the flange is bolted to the turbo.

Yes, it sounds like it needs to be rotated slightly, which is why we make the holes a little larger (to enable this adjustment). I would start by loosening the turbo bolts and the straps, then rotate one side up and the other side down - the goal being equal height tips. It sounds as though this should do it.

If that is not enough, I think slightly enlarging the holes and permitting a little more rotation will enable you to achieve the proper height adjustment you're looking for...once you have the proper height, tighten the straps first, then the turbo bolts.

John, you are always so helpful. +1 for John. By the way, mine fit very well the first time I put them on. Couldn't be happier!

Mine bolted up perfectly without issue, and I got one of the "pre-slotted" units...

Dez, you saw and heard this system on my car back in March... It's a real performer with full 70mm piping throughout and much lighter than the OEM and most aftermarket systems.

OMG, I had straight pipes for 3 days. Now I'm not old and I had a heads/cam/headers/no cats/Corsa c6z06 making near 600rwhp and it was fine. These pipes about made me go deaf with drone on the freeway. They are the AWE ones so not sure if they are different in design to others. However, the sound of the exhaust and turbo spool were freaking awesome. Anyone want some straight pipes cheap?

I understand your feeling. I had a 427 C5R Corvette with no cats and I had to scream to talk on the phone in it. But it still didnt peirce the ears like the AWE stright pipes can. The TT is funny that way, drone is very aggressive to the ears

You got it heavy, the vette was loud but didn't really drone if that makes sense. Now the TT is NO where near as loud at WOT but the drone is 10 times worse. You're right, its just weird like that. I switched to the Speedtech and can finally enjoy the car again although I miss the turbo spool sound

gut the cats, it'll give you some liveable drone, and you can still hear the Turbos, if it's anything like my PSI exhaust.
