Turbo help needed

Hello all,

I just bought a 02 996tt and I love it. I would like some of your expert opinions on turbo upgrades though. Yes, I've only had my turbo less than a week and I'm already thinking about more power. I've read several threads on our forum concerning varying turbos. It seems that the K24s are quite popular and produce more power, is this true? I read a little about a hybrid K24/18. Is this a significant upgrade to the standard K24? What are the advantages of this? Do K24s spool a lot slower than the K16s? Thanks for everyone's help, it's appreciated.

Check out the thread titled Garretts vs 24/18s a couple pages back. Also see the thread "Looking for a little more power for my 16s." There's a wealth of info in these two.

How much power do you want and how much are you willing to spend. If money isnt really an issue go with a Garrett BB Turbo (GT 25 or 30). They use the latest technology, spool extremely fast and produce amazing power.

Otherwise there are a couple other options in order from least to most expensive...

-16/16g: fast spool, and good for around 500 whp.
-16/24 hybrid: combines the spool of a k16 with the top end of a k24 and is good for around the same power as the 16g
-24/18g: spool is a little slower than either of the two aforementioned but good for around 700bhp.

Also take into account that you will need programming, an exhaust, DV's, 5 bar FPR, etc... to make the most of any turbo upgrade.

My cost benefit analysis goes like so:
K16/16g if you are shooting for 600hp
K24/18g if you are shooting for 700hp (and are willing to pay for a fueling upgrade - injectors/pumps)
GT turbos if you are shooting for 700hp plus (and are willing to pay for fueling and internals).

I'm far from an expert on the matter as I'm new to p-cars but I've decided to go with Garret turbos. My reasoning is that everytime I try to go the less expensive route I end up kicking myself later because I have to upgrade again. My advice is have an ultimate hp goal, even if it will take some time to get there. I'll do the turbos/exhaust/tune first, then I'll still have room to grow when I later decide to do a fuel system. Just my .02. Good luck
