driving a tiptronic

could any of you with tiptronic 996tt cars (2002) give me your tricks for getting the most out of the tip. still learning it, feel like i don't quite have it down. how will it respond to my stage 1 reflash?

I wish I could help you out - I dont have any seat time in a tip. A close friend of mine swears up and down that the tips are actually a tad quicker than the 6-speed. I don't know how true that is though.

MY996,

i am experimenting. trying to stay in auto with occasional manual input. I am there doesn't seem to be middle ground between puttering around and roaring. what am I missing.

Tips can be faster than 6 speed in a launch situation.

Put your feet on the gas and brake when fully stopped. Wait for the boost to build and pop the brake pedal. The car should really take off....

This technique only works when at a full stop, otherwise the PSM will kick in and ove ride the gas pedal.

I dont think the 996tt tip is faster then a 6 speed.. BUT I think the 997tt tip is faster then the 997tt 6 speed..

I don't know if what you're referring to is a Tip issue or a turbo issue in general. My car boosts up to 1.4 bar but somehow it is difficult to keep her in around .7-1.2 bar. Most of the time is either between .0-.4 or top it.

Some people like to keep the Tip on M, but I don't. I almost don't go to M no more, and keep mine on A. In A, you still get all the Tip functions. When you feel the car is in the wrong gear and lack of power (5th gear, going uphill at 35 mph), you just down shift once (the boost would kick in a little also); and let the car shift up by herself (like after 8 seconds). If you feel like racing a little, you can down shift a couple of times, floor it, and there she goes. I don't do up shift and just let the car does it; I think you can maximize the redline this way. You will find the Tip is a very smart transmission. If you are going down hill and traffic in front of you, the car knows to stay in 3rd and doesn't up shift.

At a stop, you still can go into 1st by down shifting in A. I don't know how much power your car has but I have to turn off the PSM when I do what ARI mentioned; or else the computer would shut off the throttle due to wheel spin.

I've found that the car "learns" your driving habits. If you drive like a grandma it will act like a grandma. It will upshift very early and wollow around town at 2K RPM. However, if you consistantly drive more aggresively the transmission will hold the current gear longer and in general be a snappier transmission. I leave mine in auto and when I feel that the transmission is slow in responding to my needs I'll put in into whatever gear I want with the buttons then let the transmission take back over.

Just want to add a note to SLANT911, I believe the "learning" part is the ECU and not transmission. You can reset the ECU (and start learning) by disconnecting the battery for 30 min. Some say you should have your radio code ready, but I didn't need to reenter mine.

actually the Tip has its own microprocessor control unit

I believe the car has many control units... remote control, Tip, Cab Top, seat... but not all can learn.

tip is great for around town and maybe drag racing.
you have to us it in manuel mode to get anything out of it and then drive aggressively as it will reprogram to more aggressive shift points.

at the track it sucks and you are stuck with it.

I think you are on the right track with car in auto. I manually shift to 1 at lights...the trans stays in manual mode but you will leave light in 1 and it will shift to 2 based upon how open the throtle is. ie mild start tip will shift to 2 at about 3-4k...agressive start and it will hold 1 to redline. Starting in 2 causes more engine noise/resonance esp at rpm 2200 to 2600...I avoid cruising in that rpm range. You must be alert to the possibility that the tip may not shift from 1 to 2 when you would want it to...so manually shift to 2 if rpms are above your desired level. Tip changes/reverts to auto after eight seconds but at a stop should stay in manual until you move.

You can also choose manual and do all shifting. Tip will down shift to 2 when you stop.

The "learnig" part is all related to the auto mode. If you go through the first three gears near wot and then hit the brakes aggressively you will notice that the down shifts occur at higher rpm...and when you accellerate again a lower gear will be held longer and next shift at higher rpm, more so than when you are just cruising.

I have not used tip on the track...but I would bet it could be very fast. As far as a flash goes it works the same as manual..more Hp more Torque...and tips hold boost between shifts much better/easier than manuals.

You are right to ask how to drive the tip, because it is pretty dull around town strictly in auto. But there are techniques that improve THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE. Experiment and see what works for you...and whats wrong with "roaring"?
