Repair cost: 996TT Timing chain tensioner?

I'm just curious if anyone has had a timing chain tensioner replaced by the dealer on a 996TT.
I'm limited geographically in my options and feel the dealer (100+ miles away)may be my safest bet . So please post a figure if you've had the work done.
While on the subject: Is this a common failure with a 2001- I'm pretty sure its the tensioner, as it gives the death rattle on a cold start-up and clicks away at idle. it goes away as the revs rise above 1500 or so.
One more question: Does the 996TT have hydo-lifters and solid valve lifters?

Do a search here on the issue. Seems to be a spectrum of how noticeable this noise is based on luck of the draw. I've yet to see a definitive answer on why this is different or what causes it..or what is acceptable!

If you mean the pulley tensioner, its a pretty cheap part. There's 3 of them, 2 that are the same part #, they are under $100 each.

As far as labor, you need to remove the intake, and move the y-pipe up just remove it....

All TTs make that noise. Top off your oil with some Mobil 1 15W-50 and the racket diminishes significantly.

thanks-I'll try the 15-50W:
I'd love to believe that the noise is just one of those Porsche 911 idiosyncrasies.. but it's really hard to build confidence in the car with this noise!! It seems to eat away at my very will to live every time I drive it:

Thanks for the advice and I'll be researching this issue without abandon.. I'm tired of missing track days, cruises and even trips to the drivethru over this unsettling racket!

Hi.. Check your oil psi at idle. Also what is air temp. The 996 TT's have hydraulic buckets. Tim
